Hi Everyone, Just wondered if anyone had come across any information about my Grt Grandfather Robert Hardcastle Johnston (born Ireland 1818) married to Annie, who lived at 3 Royal Terrace. I know he had a small hotel and he died at this address in 1902. I wondered if there was any record of him or his family (three sons, Alfred, Henry and Robert) Did they go to church, were they involved with any clubs or societies. Any information most welcome. Thanks J.

Hi Jilly,
Do you have census information already or are you looking for help on that?

Hi Elizabeth, Thanks for reply, I would appreciate any information. I do have census info. I would really like to try and find out about their lifestyle, eg. any mention of them in any church groups, clubs or societies. Do you have information on 1891 census, I am not sure if they were at that address. I think there may have been some connection with the Old Pier and also the hotel which is now Daunceys. Unfortunately as happens, there aren't any living relatives that I can now ask, so have to rely only anything that was documented. If you come across anything I would appreciate the information.
Thanks Jillian

Hi Jilly,
Sorry I cannot help on the lifestyle of this family as I do not have access to Weston's history.
I see in 1881 they were at the George Hotel in a little village called Cowley nr Charlton Kings, Glos, which is where I come from but don't recall a George Hotel there. I know there was a big house called Cowley Manor which was used by the county council for youth work. Their 2 sons Robert and Henry were there as well.
They were at 3 Royal Terrace WSM in 1901 but they have the place of birth the wrong way round showing Robert from Longstop in Hampshire and Annie from Westmeath in Ireland, no sons with them.
1891 sees them at the Falcon Hotel in Painswick which is a few miles further east from Cowley. Annie is now shown to be from Longstock in Hampshire. No sons with them again.
Annie is not at 3 Royal Terrace in 1911 although the housekeeper is still there.
The only Ann Johnstone that I could find in 1911 was living at Hartley Plymouth and she was a widow born Donegall.
Do you have Annie's death year?
Sorry about the order of the information, it was as I found it.
Ellizabeth

Hi Elizabeth, Thanks again for reply. Yes I know the Johnston's kept the George Hotel it is the one on Birdlip Hill, still in operation now, we went there for a meal a few years ago. I remember as a child visiting the hotel and there was a glass etched name plate for them still over the door, we visited again some years later but sadly the plate had gone. I know the family were in the Hotel or Lodging house business as it was called then. I have found Annie died 1906 not long after her husband Robert, she was very much younger, apparently they were a devoted couple and she struggled to live without him. Their son's Alfed (eldest) joined the Royal Irish Constabulary, Henry died aged 39 of t.b. and Robert (my grandfather) lived in Ross-on-Wye married a butcher's daughter. My father carrying on this trade. I would liked to have drawn a conclusion to this in finding a little bit more about their life in Weston-super-Mare.
Regards and Thanks Jilly

Hi Jilly,
Sorry I could not give you any new information. Have you tried to contact any family history groups in Weston?
There is a group that might help at www.wsmfhs. Try contacting them and asking the question, they may have some information.
Best of luck anyway.
Elizabeth
