An 'Agent'!
« on: Friday 06 November 09 22:40 UTC (UK) » |

Can anyone help me? My grandfather Daniel Davies b 1867 married Mary Evans b abt 1861/63 in Merthyr Tydfil Mary's father was Evan Evans deceased and his occupation was 'Agent'. I am not having very much success with the Evans so has anyone any idea what occupation an 'Agent' was in abt 1870?

Just a guess, - but 'Insurance Agent'?
There's a whole string of them in my Mother's family, & it sometimes just says 'Agent' on the Censuses.

An agent was simply someone who acted on behalf of a company or another person. Without knowing where he was employed or who he acted on behalf of it is impossible to be more specific.
Is there any clue in the two censuses either side of the marriage?

I can't find the census, that was why I wanted to try to find out what kind of agent he could be, to help me find them on the census's.

Mary was born according to the marriage cert 1863 but her death certificate makes her born 1861. She was born in Merthyr Tydfil, but as there are so many Mary Evans born in Merthyr Tydfil I didn't have a clue which one to order. I don't have any census's to do with her as I was trying to work out what an agent could be and maybe get a clue from that.
On the marriage cert to Daniels Davies, Daniels fathers occupation was Farm Labourer and Evan Evans just said labourer. 23rd March 1890 Adulam Chapel, Hiawad Street. ? Not sure of the spelling but in Merthyr Tydfil

I really have no information on Mary or her father Evan other than Daniel's and Mary's marriage cert.
Yes Merthyr Tydfil was in Glamorganshire.
Thank you for helping.
