I have an ancestor called James Colvin who was born in Montrose in 1856. He married Janet Cowie and Francesca Stacey. I can only find him on the census in 1891 and 1901 which is after his 2nd marriage and he is living in Glasgow by then. All his children to Janet Cowie were born in South Shields. Hoping someone can help me.

This looks to be James and family in 1861:
James Colville 58, Ship Carpenter, b. Stonehaven, Kincardine Sarah Colville 38 b. England Jemima Colville 9 b. Arbroatt, Forfarshire David Colville 7, b. Arbroatt, Forfarshire James Colville 5 b. Montrose Robert Colville 3 b. Montrose John Colville 6 b. Montrose...I think John's age should be likely 6 months, see below
Address: 5 River St, Montrose
Birth entries on IGI for the two youngest children:
1. ROBERT COLVIN Birth: 03 JUL 1858 Montrose 2. JOHN COLVIN Birth: 09 OCT 1860 Montrose
What is the occupation showing on James' two marriage certs for his father James (was it James ?!)

Hi Monica On his death cert it states his parents are James & Sarah Mitchell but this is the only birth in Montrose I can find. I did have his marriage cert to Francesca Stacey but can't put my hand on it right now

Yes this does look like them I found a death in South Shields for James Senior in 1883 which works his yob to 1801. James senior was a joiner so the occupation fits and James Junior was a painter so I think that its a transcription error for 1871

Does look to fit doesn't it. Likely Sarah, mother's maiden name was given in error when his death was reported. Would be worth checking his marriage entry to Francesca as this would be info he would have given himself.
Struggling with the 1881 entry though!

Found the 1881 entry - surname a bit messy, I'll leave as is:
James (Sen) Colern 82, widower b. Scotland James (Jun) Colern 25, painter, b. Scotland Jennet Colern 24, b. Scotland Clara Colern 3 b. Hebburn, Durham James Colern b. Hebburn, Durham John Colern 20, brother, painter, b. Scotland
Address: No 15 Tennent St, South Shields
Father and brother John help to firm up the family we have already in Scotland in the earlier censuses.

I was only able to find him on the 1891 and 1901 and I have been looking for him for the past 6 years. His first child was born in South Shields in 1878,his last child was born in South Shields in 1884,his father died in South Shields in 1883 and he married Francesca in Glasgow in 1886. I havr searched South Shields for 1881 but cannot find him. Many thanks for finding what I have searched for years
