Hello familydar
I have noticed your kind offer and wondered if you could check the following for me please.
Edmund Cox states he was born in Symington [Could it be Semington, which is near Steeple Ashton?] in the 1861 Census aged 42, the same age as his wife. He is aged 36 in the 1851 Census place of birth Unknown Wilts. His wife is also 36.
He died in the Jun Quarter of 1870 aged 57 years.
On the IGI I have a possible baptism in Steeple Ashton, which is about 3 miles from Semington for an
Edmund Cox Christening: 14 JUN 1812 Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire, England son of Mary nee Wayland & John Cox. The problem I have is that Mary [Wayland] Cox was supposed to have been buried on the 27 JAN 1809 Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire.
I wondered if you could check the Semington PR's [I was told that there is no place named Symington] for around 1812 also could you check Steeple Ashton if you find nothing in Semington.
Thank you very much
Wendy

Hi Wendy
I'll look at this for you next week. Have you considered the possibility that the 1809 death was a sister of Edmund rather than his mother?
Regards Jane

Hi Jane
No I hadn't considered Mary as Edmund's sister [Although there is a gap between 1807 - 1810] as Mary is down as
Wife Mary Wayland Pedigree Birth: 1776 Of, Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire, England Marriage: 28 MAY 1796 Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire, England Burial: 27 JAN 1809 Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire, England
Children 1. Ann Cox 15 MAY 1796 Steeple Ashton
2. George Cox 30 SEP 1798 Steeple Ashton
3. Jane Cox 11 JAN 1801 Steeple Ashton
4. Charles Cox 25 SEP 1803 Steeple Ashton
5. John Cox 18 MAY 1806 Steeple Ashton
6. Sarah Cox 25 MAY 1806 Steeple Ashton
7. John Cox 20 SEP 1807 Steeple Ashton 8. Thomas Cox 04 MAR 1810 Steeple Ashton 9. Edmund Cox 14 JUN 1812 Steeple Ashton
I did find these later ones
IGI Individual Record MARY ANN COX Christening 23 OCT 1814 Steeple-Ashton Death 26 SEP 1824 Parents John COX and MARY
IGI Individual Record Richard COX Christening 23 MAR 1817 Steeple-Ashton parents John COX and MARY
There could be two John & Mary Coxs' of course as they are not unusual names to say the least.
There is also a John & Ann having children from about 1816
There are a lot of Cox in Steeple Ashton & some earlier ones in West Ashton not far away.
Anyway, thank you for your time and effort. There is no urgency as I have been looking for quite a while.

Hi again Wendy.
I've been to the record office and not really got you any forther forward I'm afraid.
Semington is not indexed but it's a small parish. I checked the baptisms and marriages for a few years either side of 1812 and came across not one single Cox.
Steeple Ashton is indexed to 1800, according to the index John Cox married Mary Wayland 28th March 1796 - I hope I didn't write it down wrongly. The baptisms of the first two children (Ann & George) were also indexed. I didn't look at the parish records for these events. I checked to see if there was a marriage licence bond, because sometimes these can yield new information, but there wasn't one.
The 1809 burial (27th Jan) at Steeple Ashton was of Mary Cox, wife of John Cox, age 33 years. As Edmund and various of his siblings were baptised after that date I think you're looking for a second marriage (or as you've already alluded to, a second John & Mary; it may not have been Mary Wayland that was buried). Hasn't it struck you as weird that John and Sarah were baptised a week apart or is one of the dates a typo? I checked the Steeple Ashton marriages from 1809 to 1812 and although there were plenty of Cox marriages, none were of a John to a Mary. What must be yet another John Cox, a bachelor, married an Elizabeth Griffen a few days before Mary's burial. I checked Edmund's baptism and his parents were definitely John and Mary. There was no note as to the child's age.
If John remarried in Wiltshire and you don't know (or can't guess at) the parish, you might want to consider paying to have the Nimrod index searched. Unfortunately all it seems all I've been able to establish for you is that Edmund's mother may not have been Mary Wayland
Best wishes Jane

Hi Jane
Thank you so much for spending your time looking up the information I requested.
At least you have confirmed what I suspected.
I will have a re-think and may be tackle it from a different angle. I think I'll join Wiltshire FHS after Christmas.
Anyway, thank you once again.
