hopeless at maths
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 01:41 UTC (UK) »

Call me stupid, but I can't get my head around this date.

Newsarticle printed on Wednesday 2nd April 1856 states:

A meeting of the magistrates was held on Tuesday week last.

so the Tuesday just gone would have been the 1st of April right?, then are they saying it was the week before Undecided

I recall there is one of those calendars that cover all years on the net, can someone point me to it please so I can get the exact date of this particular meeting please Roll Eyes

wish they would just put the date the meeting was held, would be so much easier, well for me  Grin Grin

Think you'll find the crucial word is WEEK. Means you go back one week to the Tuesday of that week. Likewise if it had said 'Fortnight last' you go back two weeks. So you have got the date right.

Don't think it is used much these days, most would write the date. Lot easier for the brain  Grin

Agreed - "Tuesday last week" would have been 25th (March having 31 days)

I remember a discussion with my Dad years ago, regarding the finer points of "last Monday", "Monday last week", "this Monday", "Monday this week", "next Monday" and "Monday next week".
His argument, which I couldn't disagree with, ran along these lines...
Quote
What do you call Saturday and Sunday?
The weekend.
Week.
End.
End of the week.
So the week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday.
So whatever day it is, "this week" is from the first Monday you come across counting backwards (including today) to the next Sunday you come across counting forwards (including today)

"Last Monday" is imprecise. It could mean "Monday last week" or "the first Monday you come across counting backwards (NOT including today)".
"This Monday" is imprecise. It could mean "Monday this week" or "this coming Monday".
Likewise "Next Monday". It could mean "Monday next week" or "the first Monday you come across counting forwards (NOT including today)".

To sum it up:

Last Monday could be this Monday but NOT next Monday.
This Monday could be last Monday, but it could also be next Monday.
Next Monday could be this Monday but NOT last Monday.

The advice? Be precise!

So that's all cleared up then!

Thanks, clears up perfectly

I'll second that  Grin

Must have learn't something along those lines many many moons ago. Probably explains why - when I talk about last day/weekend gone I always add the rider -  not the X/X that's just gone but the one before.  Smiley
