What Newspapers covered 1851 obituaries for Bothwell?
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 02:28 UTC (UK) »

Hello everyone,

Can anyone please tell me what newspaper may have covered obituaries for Bothwell in 1851?

Was there a Bothwell newspaper in 1851?

Regards

Certainly as Dixons says the Hamilton Advertiser always covered Bothwell - my grandparents got it posted to them every week long after they left the area.  However, as far as I know this only starts, or maybe only survives, from around 1856 and  I can't think of many local Lanarkshire newspapers that survice that far back.  It might be worth contacting Bothwell or Hamilton libraries to find out if there is anything available from that time, or also possibly the National Library of Scotland who have microfilm newspaper covering the whole of Scotland.

When you say Bothwell do you mean the village of Bothwell or the parish of Bothwell? In 1851 Bothwell village would have been very small.

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for all your replies.

My g,g,g, Granfather Walter Bell died on the 5th July 1851 and is buried at St Brides Kirkyard.
(please see Lanarkshire Topic: 'Walter Bell, stonemason / Freemason? - Bothwell - Info Required)
Headstone photo included.

Walter left £251.13.8 in his will, made on 24th January 1852 at Glasgow by the eminent, Henry Glassford Bell (no relation)

This money was banked at that time at the 'British Linen Company bank at Hamilton' (any records of this bank?)

I understand this amount is the equivalent of £25,254 in todays money.
Quite a considerable amount at any standard!

I believe Walter must have been an outstanding member of the community, he was a surveying stonemason on the 1851 census and possibly a Freemason?
I have written to the Grand Lodge at Edinburgh and await for any information available.

What I am basically trying to find out, was there a more detailed Obituary more than the standard notice? in which would give me a more social understanding of my g,g,g, Grandfather Walter.

Regards
