Info required on Thomas and Catherine Watson. Catherine was born c1858 in the Tanfield area. Have found a marriage in 1881 in the Lanchester district which is probably her to a Thomas Watson. I realise that Watson is a popular name in the Durham area but are there any promising sightings please. Hinton.

HI CJL, All this info is great. Could I please have a check on Charlotte dau aged 1 in 1891 and Charlton 11 son in 1901. Its possible they could be twins and one has been omitted or the enumerator getting carried away with the dittos. Thanks,

Hinton,
1891 census should read,
Charlton Watson Son 1 Born Tanfield, Durham
Sorry I misread the forename as Charlotte.

Hinton,
You are most welcome. I think that I have found Thomas Watson on earlier census records, would you like the information?

Yes please. The more info the better. Have been looking up births for the stepsons and have found a birth for a Thomas Watson Oxley covering the time frame of the one on the 1891 census. It also raises the question were they illegitimate or had Catherine been married previously. Hinton.

Hinton,
Have you found Catherine on the 1881 census, if not I can take a look for her and her two sons if you would like me to.
I think that this could be Thomas Watson in 1861.
48 South Moor, Butsfield, Lanchester, Durham
Thomas Watson head 39 Coal Miner born Wolviston, Durham Jane Watson wife 39 born Tanfield, Durham Jane Watson Dau 15 born South Shields, Durham George Watson Son 11 Coal Miner born Lanchester, Durham William Watson Son 9 Scholar born Lanchester, Durham Matthew Watson Son 7 Scholar born Lanchester, Durham Hall Watson Son 5 Scholar born Lanchester, Durham Thomas Watson Son 3 born Lanchester, Durham Sarah Isabella Watson Dau 8 Months born Lanchester, Durham
There is a tree on Ancestry which gives Thomas' mother Jane's maiden name as Charlton. The tree gives no further details.
I will look for the family in later census records. Let me know if you want me to find catherine in earlier census records.

Hi CJL, Thanks, I have Catherine on earlier census, and have just gone bk to look at the 81. Catherine unmarried and several grandchildren are with her Mother. I assumed they belonged to Catherines siblings but it would now appear that two of them are hers and were illegitimate. Thanks for the offer. Hinton.

Hello CJL, As a PS when you have a moment could you do some sleuthing on the 2 stepsons Thomas & William. on the 1901 census. Thomas would be bn c1875/76 and William C1879/1880. It is hard to pinpoint as there are 2 or 3 of each name bn Durham in the timeframe. Am wondering if the William Watson Oxley I found is Catherine`s William. Found his death Sept Q 1901 so he should be on the Census. Thanks, Hinton.
