Ockenden family - Sevenoaks - early 1800's
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 11:31 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for the family of George Ockenden, who states consistently through the census records in London, that he was born in 1809-1810 in Sevenoaks, Kent. However, I can find no trace of him there, with my current resources.

What I have found is this:

A couple of possible brothers show up on the census records: In 1841, 32 year old Edward Ockenden and 20 year old Thomas Ockenden live separately in Seven Oaks Kent.  In 1851, Edward is 38 and Thomas is 34, if I have found the same men.

An Edward Ockenden was baptized in Sevenoaks Mar 24 1814 parents: John and Phoebe Ockenden.

The IGI has some Sevenoaks activity for Ockendens: The marriage of Edward Ockenden and Sarah Heath 05 APR 1775 and a number of females born to Edward and Sarah (and one to Henry and Mary) between 1781 & 1789. It looks as though the records they have transcribed contain only females.

John Ockenden and Phoebe Ellis were married 05 Jun 1809 in nearby Chelsfield, Kent and daughter Susan was baptised April 1, 1810 in Bromley.

How do I go about getting birth / baptism records in Sevenoaks, particularly for George,  in the early 1800's?

The only records you may possibly get before 1837 registration is church records or IGI, most babies were baptised, there will be no certificates before 1837, if Sevenoaks has drawn a blank try widening it a bit
Have a you a marriage cert for him showing a father?

I don't know just where he was married. I assume, since his wife was born in Parsons Green, Fulham and their kids were born in Fulham, that it was probably in one of the Fulham churches existing about 1830.

So no, I don't have a name for his father.

I will send for church records soon, but I had hoped to exhaust the internet resources first, to avoid too much futile searching through physical records.
