Catts of Thurnham Kent
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 06:08 UTC (UK) »

Over the years and with the assistance of various other family researchers I've been able to trace my family back to Richard Catt b. 1680 in Thurnham. Working from Australia has meant that I have only the bare detail of around 4 generations including this Richard. I would like to be able to give some life to these people other than just a date of birth, marriage and death. So I suppose my question is  - given that Richard, his son Richard b. 1715/16, his son John b. 1758 and yet again his son Richard b. 1791  Smiley (my name is also Richard!!) were Farmers & Parish Overseers where would I be able to find something more about their life in and around Thurnham.
I'm guessing that I would probably need to visit the UK to complete this type of research so what I'm really doing is advance planning as much as anything (unless of course someone else already has this all neatly packaged for me!).

Hi Rick,

I am from Australia too, and I am just starting out on this site, but started on the family tree 2 years ago.

I found most of the "characters" on my tree (not just names and dates) using the Census. In fact I've become a bit addicted to the census. I use Ancestry.co.uk as my best way of searching because the search engine is fantastic.

When I find a family on the census, I try and find the address where they are living (this can be hard and sometimes you have to go back to page 1 of the census and check the route the census collector walked on census night). I then google map the address to see if the house is still there.

The occupations from the census also give you a good insight to the family and if you are lucky they might belong to a Guild or be listed in a directory.

I also look up to see if the village has a website. They often have really good historical photos.

After all this I put a time line together for the family. Its a bit like dropping in on them every 10 years to see how they are going.

Before 1841 is harder though, especially from Aus. unless you have a contact in UK who doesn't mind searching for you.

If you are planning a trip over, do as much research as you can before you go Hubby and I were there earlier this year, and now I am kicking my self that  didn't spend more time before we went researching so I could do the hands on stuff when I got there. Did find "the convicts" family home though so that was a bonus.

Hope this helps, cheers Ted

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I've already exhausted the census records and am really looking at records from 1690 on. As the family were apparently land-owners and lived in Thurnham for a good 100 years I hope to get advice on land records, Parish notes regarding the "overseer" his appointment and duties and any other records that would mention regular parish life in Thurnham.

Hi Rick

I was just going to suggest you went down to the Kent board where there should be some specialists on what is available for the county - and the Mod beat me to it and moved you.  Kent isn't one of my places but a good place to start is in the resources available section down here.

Happy Hunting.

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure I know Bluesky from other areas looking at the specific research being done, in which case I'm ahead. But I will pm Bluesky just in case.
