1891 Census - Bigg family
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 20:57 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for the Bigg family (sometimes mis-spelt Brigg/Biggs etc.) and am only missing the 1891 Census details.  I have tried many variations on the name and used only the first names and dates of birth, but with no success.  Could anyone help please?

The 1881 Census is as follows:
James Bigg aged 34 Labourer Born Chatham (actually 41)
Julia Bigg aged 32 Born Ireland (actually 35)
Mary Bigg 8 Born Chatham
Amos Bigg 5 Born Chatham (actually 6)
Martha Bigg 3 Born Chatham (actually 5)
Julia Bigg 2 Born Chatham (actually 3)
Living at 2 Clover Alley, Chatham, Kent.

The ages are not accurate here as shown by the bracket information and differ in all the census returns I have from 1841.  James was variously said to be born in Plumstead and Woolwich but Julia was definitely born in Cork in Ireland and the children in Chatham.
In 1901 and 1911 James and Julia are living in Strood.

Thanks in advance

I'm afraid I can't see them in 1891 either.  Angry

Thanks for looking anyway!

Do people often get "missed" off census returns, and how?  As far as I know they only ever lived in Chatham and Strood but I've done a countrywide search anyway with no success.

I don't know if the statistics exist, of if they would confirm people "often" get missed from census returns, but it certainly DOES happen.

There are also pages, and even whole parishes missing in some years, although as far as I can tell thats not the case for the Chatham/Strood area in 1891.

Have you tried checking for the addresses the family were at in 1881 and 1901, to see if anyone has been recorded there in 1891? A long shot, requiring the right access to all the pages, and patience, but might be worthwhile.

I had heard that pages of some census returns were missing, and wondered if this might be the case here.

I have checked the Clover Alley address in Chatham for 1891 but with no success.  They seem to have only moved between Chatham and Strood - James and Julia were in Strood in 1901.

Maybe I'll get a lucky break!
