If you have a subscription to a site that has the BMD indexes available (Ancestry, Findmypast etc.) you will be able to search for the entry.

Alternatively your local library will probably have a subsciption to Ancestry that you will be able to use for free.

Record Offices and libraries with Family History Departments will also have the indexes on microfiche for you to search.

At that date you will need to search the images page by page, but when you find it you will have the reference - year and quarter, volume and page number.

These are the details you will need to order the death certificate from the GRO, which you can do online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Thanks MaryA, have not been able to find him on bmd's, and I live in Australia so am not able to search in person. He died in the 1950's/1960s, may have to join a subscription. thank you again

Have you only tried searching the database - ie FreeBMD etc.?

As you don't live in England you can also view the indexes at your nearest LDS centre.  http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

Hiya Jean...www.lancashirebmd.org.uk has the marriage...note the spelling ...and location in 1902
James HOWARTH Cryer to Elizabeth Allison  at St Marys church Nelson , reg office is Preston ..CE126/2/145
on www.freebmd.org.uk is his birth
born Dec qtr 1881 Cryer James Howorth registered at Burnley 8e 177
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk also has his birth
Cryer James Howorth 1881 sub district Burnley,Register office Preston..BU/139/72

So he wasn`t born in Rochdale and he married in Nelson......might I suggest you request if someone can find James in the 1911 census so we might find if he is living in Rochdale ?.....allan Wink

Thank you Garstonite and Evie, I had found both the birth and marriage on free bmd but the death was the one which eluded me. thank you both for your info and advice.
MaryA, I think the James H Cryer Littleborough could be the one I am looking for, the age and death date are pretty close. Thank you all again so much.
