Look up request Parish Records - Robert HERD
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 09:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi
My 1st request as I am new to the Irish Family History.

I have a Richard Jefferey Herd (b: 1880 in Plymouth).
His father was Robert HERD B:abt 1847 - Confirmed

The 1881 census states father Robert HERD was born in Cork, Ireland and that he was a Coast guard.

A marriage certificate of father Robert Herd and Julie Daly in 1872 state Robert was a Seaman then and that his father was also a Robert Herd and also a Coast Guard.

UK archives have provided a Seamans record for Robert Herd which has him born 17 April 1848 @ Clonkilty, Ireland.

UK archives have also provided a Seamans record for Robert Herd possibly his father which has him born 127 Sep 1819 @ Aberdeen, Scotland. Family history suggests that this is correct.

My request is for a lookup of Parish records for a baptism (possibly RC) for the above ie Robert Herd born 17 April 1848 @ Clonkilty, Ireland. I would like to know the parents names. Is it Robert Herd and Catherina O'Connell? (note these names were given on IGI for a Jeremias Herd in 1857 in Sligo, which is 90% certain a brother - long story).

If I can not get a baptism record - where else could i search please?

Thank you in anticipation

Hi,

There is a George Herd born 1842 and baptized in Cobh Roman Catholic Church. His father is Robert.

Found this on the mallow heritage centre site its 5 euro pay per view so expensive enough. This is the only way you can see the mother's name online at least.
http://corknortheast.brsgenealogy.com/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

It does not cover Clonakilty area. But its reasonable that Robert Herd Coastguard would be living in Cobh at some stage as this is one of the main Ports.

In Griffiths Valuation there is a Robert Herd in Clonakilty area taken around 1851.

Surname Forename Townland Parish County
Herd Robert South Ring Templeomalus Cork

He was renting a House and paying 16 shillings the following link will take you there and if you click on original page icon can see the original details and there is an option to print as well. Griffiths listed heads of households who held/rented land/property.

Robert Herd Griffiths Valuation

Templeomalus is a parish part of Clonakilty area.

In the 1833 Tithe of the area there does not seem to be any Herd family in the parish.
http://myhome.ispdr.net.au/~mgrogan/cork/templeomalus.htm

The Tithe is a list of heads of households that paid tax. Not all families would be listed however.

Thank you so much Gerard - I'll start there.

Griffiths Valuations - best site and easiest to move around - thank you

UK Archives - Coast Guard Establishment Ireland 1845-1862 (unindexed but fantastic) put him at
Dunny Cove, Kinsdale 1847-1856
Rachley 1856-158
Rosses Point 1858-1861
Mullaglmore - 1861-?

The person i suspect is the brother - Jeremiah Herd was born in Sligo in 1857 which makes it logical.

It also makes sense that there were no Herds (of this particular Family) as yet as they were supposed to have originated from Scotland.

Thanks once again

Surname Forename Townland Parish County
Heard Robert Brass Cock Hill Kinsale Kinsale Cork
Heard Robert Fisher Street Kinsale Kinsale Cork

Hi

Had another look on
http://corknortheast.brsgenealogy.com/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

And there is a Robert Heard getting married in 1839 in Cobh Roman Catholic Church.

The grooms and bride's are indexed separate but there is also a Catherine Connell getting married in 1839 in Cobh Roman Catholic Church.

Might be worth a shot purchasing the Robert Heard marriage in 1839. Cant guarantee this will be right marriage though.

mmm - HEARD. I have included this spelling in all searches but they never seem to fit.

It's strange but the HERD spelling seems to have been very consistent throughout all the docs / references i have found. The 1st names altered in the Sligo baptism docs to Robertus Herd and Catherina  and Jeremias. I assume that is the latin version for the Roman Catholic Church.

Well i could imagine a Scottish man in Cobh saying his name as Herd and being written down as Heard by the priest.

I remember a few years ago when Cork City played Hibernian and i could not understand most of what the Hibernian fans were saying sometimes Smiley

Date & station transferred from : 22 July 1861, Rosses Point
  Name : Robert Herd
  Rank : Comd Btm
  Quality : Re C Pro[??]
Station Transferred to : Donaghadee 28 Dec 1863
  Cause/remarks: Pro ?? 9104

Thanks Shane - I downloaded this document and have been trawling through it. What a find. A lot of names keep on reappearing and I know i will need to trawl through at a later date as names become more relevant. Pity it has not been indexed as yet.
