Hi janemck,
A Big Welcome to RootsChat
The age seems about 5 years out
PARTRIDGE William Henry 22 Single father James Charles PARTRIDGE = HUBBARD Elizabeth Jane 23 Single father Thomas HUBBARD 1 Jan 1894 Res of J H Berryman Quorn Dist Fro Symbol V 178 5
I also note there is an Elizabeth Jane HUBBARD aged 21 in the destitute asylum in 1891. She is listed as Australian Born. She is in the female refuge after living previously at the Exeter Hotel. I will be able to see if there are any further details a a later time if it turns out important.
I don't see a birth in SA although there are a couple of Thomas' fathering children in SA.
Cheers Kris

Hi Jane and John,
Yes I did notice the name John, and was going to see if it was connected - suspected it was but was a little late to follow up on it last night.
Also the details for Elizabeth Jane b 1866 do not seem to match at all.
I do not see any other Hubbards in the Quorn area. I do note that John Henry BERRYMAN (the person who's home they married at was the husband of Sarah Ann PARTRIDGE (William Henry's sister)
Cheers Kris

Hi john i cant remember where i got the abt 1866 Halstead from. The name was from a history club thing here i went to they had all SA records and her name was the only thing that came up. nothing else is South Australia would show her name. But Pat in Perth did find that she is buried in Port Augusta here in South Australia and it states that she was a resident of Quorn here in South Australia. So i just took the Halstead and starting looking in UK. will keep looking cheers jane

Hi Jane,
The destitute asylum records are on microfiche. I need a reader to try to make it out. Sorry I am not at home at present, and they are unreadable with the handheld. (Sometimes unreadable on the big reader) I am very curious to read this as I do not see another Elizabeth Jane in SA. I also do not see the arrival of an Elizabeth Jane HUBBARD into SA.
The burial does not list where Elizabeth was living, it is the death record which lists her residence as of Quorn.
burial record

There is no headstone listed

Hi krisesjoint it is so sad these people had no headstone - i can image how much money it would have cost them. it still sad. and i dont even know these people. do you work for a place that has all these records - you seem to be able to get stuff. i will wait to see what you can find for me on elizabeth jane hubbard - i will keep looking my end. if i find anything out will get back on here and let you know. yesterday i spent the whole day typing out the story of james partridge down to my grandfather roy. tried to include everyone and see where they all were at certain times thru the 1900's. it was very hard and of course not really finished and a lot of assuming went on in the story. but i got to understand the whole story of all the children and their children. My grandfather was put into the goodwood orphanage with his brothers and sister - dont think i would be able to get any info on that one. and just off the top of my head (because you guys know what you are doing), how or can you get a copy of someones autopsy.... i would like to get a copy of my grandfathers roy irvington - and see what it says - there is a story behind his death...... its on my ancestry.com .. once again thank you. cheers jane

Hi everybody god its hot here.......... look what i found out today about Elizabeth Jane Hubbard Elizabeth Jane Hubbard was Australian born, her father was Thomas Hubbard. In the beginning of 1891 he admitted Elizabeth into the Destitute Asylum, he could no longer look after her. She was a general servant at the Exeter Hotel at Exeter. On the register of the Asylum in nice writting, (I have a copy of this) is written. " Encinte, pernative father, Thomas Birmingham, labourer, who she stated wrote to her from Strathablbyn about five weeks ago and sent her a cheque for 2:10.0 drawn on the Strathalbyn Bank, which she had cashed at Mr?? J. Marshall's house?? the cheque was on the Bank of SA - she stated that she has been subject to Epiliptic fits since 11 years old."
Some words are hard to work out. But she was pregnant when she went there. Her son William Hubbard was born 31.3.1891.
She left the Asylum in the October back to the Exeter Hotel. Then in the next 2 1/2 years she has met and married Henry William Partridge. Dont know yet what she was doing and what happen to her son William. There is no mention of her son after she left the asylum with him. Definately no mention of him once she met up with Henry William. He may have been fostered out or maybe left with Mrs Moore??
you were on the right track with the asylum story.. cheerrs jane

Hi -I got some history on the Exeter Hotel and Mrs Moore was there, see below....... so the Moores left the hotel in1893 about 2 years after Elizabeth went back there to live and 1 year before she got married and her son disappeared............
The Exeter Hotel is located at 152 Semaphore Road, Exeter, on the corner of Young Street. It began operation on April 19 1854 and still exists today. A Mr George Moore managed the hotel from December 19, 1888 until March 19, 1889. Margaret Moore managed the hotel from March 19, 1889 until April 27, 1889. Then George Moore managed the hotel again from April 27, 1889 until August 9 1893 when it was taken over by Alexander McAuley.
The Exeter was designed by James McGeorge and originally known as the LeFevre Hotel when John Griffiths obtained the first license on April 19, 1854. The hotel was originally located on the north side of Semaphore Road but moved to the south side and changed its name to the Exeter Hotel in September 1879.
cheers jane - now what?
