Oddfellows Association Derby
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 14:12 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Can someone please tell me what was the "Spring of Love Manchester Unity of Oddfellows" [I think that is what it says though not absolutely certain....faded writing] in Derby. It was mentioned in a Will.....with regards to moneys due from them.  I found a link but that is not working. Who exactly are the Oddfellows. Would this have anything to do with an insurance policy perhaps... or is it connected with freemasonry Roll Eyes
Hoping someone can enlighten me  Smiley
Thanks in advance..

I think there was/is a branch of Oddfellows called that. You probably found  alink via Google, and as you say it does not work. You can try clicking where it says "cached" below the Google result - all you will get though is the address which was 8in September 2009)

Spring of Love
Oddfellows Hall
32 Charnwood Street
Derby
DE1 2GU

Dunno what the problem is with their website.
Oddfellows now is like Rotary, a social club which raises money for charity and does good things. It began as a mutual society so they probably did have insurance schemes for members. (I don't mind if some one corrects me, I know very little about it )

The "Oddfellows" were a mutual society set up for the people who did not fall into main groups. i.e. most unions were for a trades like miners, ship builders etc.
My gramdfather a journeyman carpenter joined one, although in fact he was later the local secretary of the carpenters union.

This gives more details.

My Dad was member of the Oddfellows.  He joined it as a friendly society because his employer didn't pay him if he was sick (very common in the case of manual workers).  He paid a small weekly subscription - only a few pence I believe - and if he was off work sick he got a weekly payment from them.  They had an office near the top of Green Lane (right hand side as you go down from Burton Road) but also they used to hire an old schoolroom in Edward Street to collect subs one night per month.  I remember going there with my Dad to pay his subs - very important as if they weren't up to date no benefit was payable.

Thanks for reminding me of that - it's a happy memory of my Dad.
