different death dates & more info.
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 14:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I'm just a bit confused about the info on CWGC site and Ancestry. Is there any reason why Ancestry and CWGC would have different dates of death for my great uncle Thomas Quinn who was KIA in 1916. It is only a one day difference and I realise it could be a transcription error. The CWGC date seems to be correct as I visited his grave last year and the date on his headstone matches CWGC date.
However Ancestry has an extra bit of info re Thomas' place of birth which is not on the CWGC record.
Where do CWGC and Ancestry get their actual info from?
Regards
Paula

Paula
CWGC got any of their info from family members in 1920-1921 the other info re place of birth etc is from Soldiers Died In Great War(SDGW) It was also published in the 20s from next of kin submissions however its not as complete as CWGC and has errors.CWGC also has omissions which are still been rectified.

And remember that CWGC were the ones that put up the headstone so it makes sense than their date of death and that on headstone would match.

Thanks Ady and Aghadowey,
That makes sense. Since posting earlier I decided to have another look again on Ancestry for Thomas' soldier record and I hit gold.
He didn't come up under his name but did come up with just his number. I've found soldiers records before for ancestors who survived but it was quite poignant to find Thomas's this week of Remembrance Day. The saddest part of his record was a list of his belongings returned to his father.
Thanks again for your help in ending my confusion
Paula
PS the date of death on his Records matches CWGC
