Information on a variety of Somerset Militia units survives in the National Archives at Kew, if it is within visiting distance for you. There is also some information at the Somerset Record Office.

Hello flaggysmob,

There is a book in my local library which details all the volunteer militia units in existence in 1805. It has some names of people who served with these. There are quite a few in Somerset.

What was the name of your ancestor who served with this please? I can check in the book to see if he is there.

Hello again,

I had a look at the book this morning but no mention of your ancestor. It lists the militia in existence in 1805 but the people shown are officers only.

Hi Jo
Thanks for looking
they never seem to show the normal people you all ways have to dig deeper to find them ( half the fun I guess) looks like I will have to see if I can get down to Kew and have a look at the national archives
Cheers

That Flaggysmob is the way society was, and the way some people would like it to be again, a place for everthing and everything in its place! That attitude pervaded the military right through WW1, the British soldiers weren't even given identity disks, just expendable cannon fodder!

My own sentiments exactly.

It always strikes me when I look round graveyards, that, even in death there is inequality. The rich have their monuments which survive. The poor are lost without gravestone, or memorial.
