Tullamore - 1850s
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 15:45 UTC (UK) »

My GGG Grandfather was from Chilton Foliat in Wiltshire, England.  His first child was born in Tullamore in 1851. I wondered if any one had any idea of why he would be in Tullamore between 1850 to 1860ish??  His occupation from 1861 onwards was a police constable.  I haven't been able to find a marriage between him, James Pound, and his wife, Mina (possibly Mira/Maria) Dixon.  How would I search for a marriage in Tullamore?

full civil registration started in Ireland in 1864, but non-Catholic marriages were registered from 1845, and it looks like there is a promising match (although a little bit late..) for a James Pound around the right time in the Tullamore registration district :

 Name: James Pound
 Registration district: Tullamore
 Record type: Marriage
 year: 1858
 Volume: 10 / Page: 532

you can order a full cert from the GRO using these details - see : http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

I'll see if there is a cross match for this marriage to a Maria Dixon

Ok, great!  I've found her name to be spelt in many ways.  Mina/Mira/Meria/Maria.  She was from Norfolk so it was probably her accent!

Thanks.  I have all their children (I think!).  I've just always been puzzled to why I couldn't find a marriage and why their first child was born in Ireland.  Do you think they eloped or something?

Was his wife born in Ireland? (census records should show where she was born) It's most likely that he came to Ireland to do with employment or military service of some sortand met/married her in Ireland.

She was from Norfolk.  I'm interested in why they were there.  Their first child was born in 1859ish (I had put 1851 but i'd misread it), so a marriage in 1858 makes more sense now.  Can anyone find a birth for a William (middle name possibly Thomas) Pound born in Tullamore 1859??

Unfortunately civil registration of births in Ireland started 1864. For earlier dates you'd need to search for church records (if they exist).
