Parish records James C Molony Cork Co
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 16:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Wonder if you can help me?

I'm trying to find James C Molony marriage to Mary.
Would love to find his/her birth dates and then their parents (but that's a real wish list)
For later info I will need to post onto Hampshire board, so will do that bit separate (is that the best thing to do? Sorry new to this.)

James C Molony  Smiley(spelling could be other ways ie Moloney/Maloney etc) b. C1827 in Cork Co, Clonakilty (also been put as Rosscork on one Eng census) he married Mary unknown maiden name Smiley. I don't know if they married in Ireland but I am guessing they did as can find no marriages on English sites. The 1881 census give birth as 1823 but all others say 1827

By 1871 they are in England (King Somborne Hampshire) spelling Malony.

James, Mary and dau Ellen age 8, says dau born Winchester England.
I can't confirm but I think they had a son also James in C1857 born in Pottern Wiltshire England. I think this because by 1891 both are living in the same tiny hamlet and are only 3 pages from each other in census, I really don't think there will be too many Molony's in the area (spelt Maloney on 1891)

I thank you for any help that you have, I have been looking on the same thing for ages and coming up with nothing. Kindest regards.

Hi

I can't help you directly (to find records of Irish births pre-1864 you need to know the religion and the townland/parish of origin) but I hope the following may be of help.

1. If you order the English birth certificates for Ellen and/or James junior, you will find out Mary's maiden name. This could be helpful further down the line. It could even be very helpful if it is an unusual name.

2. Rosscork could be an abbreviation for
     a) the parish of Rosscarbery (aka Ross or Rosseletteri) in South West Cork or
     b) the town of Rosscarberry. The latter is the next town of any size running westwards from Clonakilty.
If James lived between Clonakilty and Rosscarberry it wouldn't be odd for him to refer to offer either town as his birthplace.

If you discover Mary's maiden name, and you know the family were not Roman Catholics, I'd suggest your next port of call should be to search the LDS pilot site of irish civil registrations for marriages.

Alternatively, if you discover Mary's maiden name and you know the family were Catholics, you'll need to turn your attention to the marriage and birth registers of the parishes of Clonakilty and  Rosscarberry. Surviving registers cover the period you are looking for. They can be viewed on microfilm at the National Library in Dublin (no charge). If still no joy, you'll need to extend your search into the neighbouring parishes.

I hope this provides some pointers for your research.

Good luck,

Rose
