Sgt Pilot Robert Kemp MacAndrew
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 16:20 UTC (UK) »

The cwgc site lists Sgt MacAndrew as being killed on 14/7/1943 but I can find no information regarding the circumstances

I have a newspaper cutting from that time that says he was killed in a flying accident. It also says that he started in the army and was transferred into the airforce in 1941.

Does anyone have any other information

Thanks Briant

I would assume this is him though he was 25 at time of death not 23, I have not managed to view this either through FreeBMd or IGI.

A question that arises, were servicemens deaths usually recorded on the normal civil records, why was his if he was killed in a flying accident, which I have assumed was RAF/service related

If you are a relative of his and you can prove it then you can fill in form and get sent a copy of his RAF records. It might be worth looking on the national archives site see if they have any records of him. If you knew what sqn he was on it would be really helpful as many of them have associations which records.  If it says which plane it is there is also a plethora of books that have potted details in them that can tell you a bit more aswell.
I had a look on the London Gazette site and he doesnt seem to have been awarded any medals so it may have been early on in his RAF career.

Thanks Dee.

I am helping my daughter with some family history research into her husbands family. Robert MacAndrew is her husbands, grandfathers brother.

We have a newspaper cutting/photo from 1943, which states:

"------------- received intimation that her husband Sgt-Pilot Bert MacAndrew, RAF, was killed in a flying accident in England. A Territorial he was called to the colours at the outbreak of the war, serving with the signallers in the fighting in France leading up to St Valery, and was transferred to the RAF in 1941 -- --"

The cwgc site does not say what Sqdn he was attached to, nor do we know if any medals were awarded for his army service.

I have received some information via the RafCommands website " 3 PAFU lost 2 Oxfords in a collision 1m NE Bibury on 14/7/1943. HM649 and HM962 but no crew details"

Another pilots death was registered at Cirencester on the same day 1575040 sgt Albert Harvey Iremonger.

Could all this be connected, can anyone provide the glue to stick this together.

Unfortunately I dont know whether the training units maintained F540 (daily records for happenings) but the National Archives would.  You could also contact the RAF Museum at Hendon who might be able to help you.  They have an enquiry page on their website.
I dont suppose by some fluke the person has put which newspaper on the top.  It might be worth contacting them if they have.
Is your daughter a member of ancestry.com as they may have records to do with his terrier service.....  He may have changed numbers but it will give you a hook in case he didnt.
As far as RAF records are concerned if your great uncle in law has family they are the ones who can get his records.  Closest relative to the person is best....
