Brandi - Holborn, Southwark and Amalfi
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 16:24 UTC (UK) »

I am researching the family tree of a friend of mine.

I have traced to Antonio Brandi (b. 12 Aug 1915, Holborn), mothers name was Gambardella

The problem is that i dont think they married here, so i cant find their names. On the other hand, i have found some people who could be siblings to Brandi (Antonio's aunts and uncles). They are Andeo, Vincenzo and Trofimena. Andeo states his birth place as Napoli (very near the Almalfi). It was not uncommon to state a large town as a place of birth.

Also, there are a number of Gambardella's living in the same area of london (one even gives his birthplace as Amalfi!) its likely that the Brandi/Gambardella married in Italy, then moved over to join thier relatives.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is it possible to access the birth records for Holborn without having to get a birth certificate?

Hi, Vincerzo Brandi is on the 1911 census in London. Born 1886 aged 25.

I have seen that - it seems strange that he is the only Brandi recorded....

I think you should buy the birth certificate, unless you know which church the family attended and can check for baptism records.  (It

As to the 1911 census, there are probably others who are hidden by wrong transcriptions. For example, there is a family in Southwark listed as "BRAUDI".  As there was a Brandi/Gambardella birth in Southwark in 1912, this could be the right one.

Ah yes Braudi - Antonio's son has mis-transcribed as Braudi on his birth record

That family is one i believe to be an Uncle to the Antonio i am looking for. They are together on the 1901 census

Hi

The family is very likely to be Catholic. Catholic churches do not release their records to county record offices. They usually remain with the church or in a Catholic repository.  The most likely Catholic church in the Holborn area that they might have attended is St Peter's Italian Catholic church so it might be worth checking with them first.
