Hello Wildgoose,

I was at the York City Archives last year, looking at Workhouse registers from the 1880's.
I kept a copy of their list of holdings, and it looks as though you may be in luck.
Quoting from their list....
"Indoor Relief - York Workhouse
Creed Registers Accession 122:1-13 - Indexed - 1889-1930
Date of admission, name, religious creed, name of informant, discharged or dead - latter category infrequently filled in for earlier volumes

Registers from 1906 additionally include date of register entry - often admission backdated, year of birth, occupation, where slept previous night, name and address of relative or friend"

They were very helpful.  I e-mailed them before I visited, and they replied very quickly with information to help my search.  They also offer a research service - have a look at the website -  http://www.rootschat.com/links/07fe/

best wishes,
