Henry GOSS - Combe Martin, Devon
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 22:04 UTC (UK) »

Henry Goss married Mary Challacombe in Combe Martin, Devon on 12 May 1783. Henry was buried at Combe Martin on 7 October 1830, aged 83. He was, therefore, born about 1747.

Can anyone find a baptism and the parents for Henry?

Hi wozzle,

Many thanks for the suggestion.

It's possible in that it is in the right sort of area but there is quite a large difference in the year I would have expected from his age on burial. However, his wife Mary Challacombe was born and baptised in Combe Martin in 1763 so that a birth around 1747 might be too early.

I don't know Henry's occupation. However, two of his his sons were blacksmiths and one was a husbandman. Henry may have moved to the area in the early 1780s in connection with the mines.

The following entry appears in Out of the World and into Combe Martin by Combe Martin Local History Group - Chapter on the Vestry: 1784 - Paid Henry Goss for Riting ye Clock and making a New Clapper for ye Great Bell...9s 0d.

There are quite a few North Devon parishes where baptisms are not in the IGI so that there may be other possibilities.
