Silver medal of merit awarded by Col Hugh Percy
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 23:37 UTC (UK) »

My 4 X Gt Grandfather George Kirk born 1742 in Sheffield was in the 5th Foot Regiment he was presented with this medal by Colonel Hugh Percy of Alnwick Castle on St George's day 1769 think it was for 14years service the story goes he was just 12 years of age when he joined the regiment.

Wonder if any one out there could shed some light on this. George was wounded in the Bunker Hill War and returned to work in Alnwick Castle around 1778 he worked there for about 35 years.

Any information however small would be much appreciated, thank you for reading this

You could try contacting the archivist at Alnwick Castle

Thanks Stan

Have tried on two occasions but they say they have nothing, which seems odd after working there for about  35 years  they have started charging for searches now.
A distant cousin is going to try, even a friend who was visiting Alnwick in the Summer called in person and still nothing.

Thanks for your time
