Dowling
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 05:10 UTC (UK) »

Looking for people researching Dowlings of Ballytore or Ballytore Hill Co. Kildare Ireland, specifically Denis Dowling father of James Joseph Francis Dowling, b. 1880 and Annie Teresa Dowling, b. 1890/1.  On marriage licenses said father was a blacksmith or ferrier.  On 1911 Census Annie Teresa was in Lancashire, England.  On one paper James Joseph Francis Dowling said born in Wicklow, but one source for Denis Dowling said HE was born in Wicklow.

Ballitore is very close to the Wicklow border.
Here's the link to Denis Dowling 1911 census-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002560207/
Think son Richard might be aged 27 not 24 (it's the way the numbers are written that is confusing).

Not sure if this fits but IGI lists 2 sons to a Denis Dowling and Theresa Murphy-
James born 10 Apr.1878 Hollwood, Wicklow
Richard born 2 Jan.1881 Ireland (surname Dooling)

That would be the right one, I think, because James lists on his marriage license Co. Wicklow Hollwood (the one in the other link).  I think these are the parents of Annie Theresa in the other Scott thread you have responded to.  She has an older brother James Joseph Francis Dowling.
In another posting I was looking at there were several other children, it seems.  Would Nan be a common nickname for Annie?  The person on the other posting said two children Jim and Nan moved to London; Richard moved to the United States later on.

a possible connection to the Dowling/Blacksmith connection from Slater's directory 1894 :

Patrick Dowling, blacksmith, Kilcullen (aka Kilcullen bridge)

Kilcullen is about 15km north of Ballytore.

Annie Theresa in the 1911 Census where she is living in Lancashire England says birthplace is Ballyton Hill (is that a mistake by the census taker or is that all part of the same region?)  Thanks for the additional info above

Ballytore hill is very close to Ballytore - less than a km. see google map : http://www.rootschat.com/links/07fj/

found a Dowling blacksmith connection on the 1911 census in Kilcullen village -see : #64, Killcullen Town, Kildare

Nan/Nancy are nicknames for Annie so Nan probably is Annie Teresa.

Thank you all for help.  One more question..Is anyone researching this family?
or the Murphy family from that area?
I am trying to find when Teresa Murphy may have died as Denis remarried to a Mary a few years  after Annie's birth in1891

Searching for death of a Theresa Dowling 1890-1910 brings up 3 possiblities-
most likely seems to be Theresa DOWLING (age 40) Oct/Dec 1891 Baltinglass registration district volume 2 page 302.
If this is the corret one looks like she might have died at the time of Annie's birth or shortly afterwards.

Yes, that information would fit.  It seems Annie Teresa Dowling who was born in 1890/91 hasn't been recorded anywhere.  I can't find a birth registration for her. But her mother must have died either when Annie was born or very shortly after.

If the mother died or was ill when Annie was born perhaps her name wasn't chosen at the time the birth was registered and it's under 'female' Dowling.

See this thread where I mentioned a Dowling currently owns the old forge at Ballybarney which is in the same district.

Thanks for help.  I'm trying to find where Denis and Teresa might be buried although he had a second wife Mary after Teresa died.
I'm trying to find the marriage for Denis Dowling and Teresa Murphy from 1870s in the Ballytore area. Could someone steer me to resources for this area?
Thanks in advance.

to find a marriage the place to start is the Civil Index - see the familysearc link mentioned in aghadowey's post. Search marriages in the area, and approx time for both the bride & groom, and note the index references (registration district, year/qtr, volume & page) then look for a cross-match.

Deaths are listed on the same index, but burials are not easy to locate. The best bets are to check their local church cemetary (i.e. where children were baptised) or to find out when & where they died, and then find out what the nearest church/graveyards are.
