1851 census - Wittersham, Kent
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 08:05 UTC (UK) »

I have my ancestor Charlotte Bradley and her two illegitimate children on the 1851 census living at Peiving Farm, Wittersham. On the original census page in the occupation column it gives Charlotte's occupation as 16-5, and on the transcription on FMP thats what her occupation is listed as.

16-5? Surely thats just what the enumerator has written for some reason.

HO107/1620/158/9

Can anyone shed any light on to what that might mean - I'm interested as Charlotte had her two children at the Tenterden Union workhouse and I wonder how she was supporting herself and her family.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Kim

Hi Kim

At the reference you give - I see no Charlotte BRADLEY?

I do see Mary SIMS 55, a  daughter of Thomas SIMS 74?  listed on that page and at Pieving Farm. In the address column for her  is written 16-5. This notation is made by the checking process of the book (it seems to be in a different hand, or at least not written at the tiime Mary's name &  other details were  written). It is probably some math working out:  counting or working out  the stats for the page

Cheers

Charlotte is on page 9 of that piece & Folio.

Hmm, I do think, actually, it's some kind of Occupation Classification code for statistical purposes - maybe the checker deemed both women should have an occupation entered, and 16-5 was the code he chose

Which brings us back to your question  Grin  Roll Eyes, what was it a code for!

Hi Ambly

Sorry - I was looking for the address and had to go to page 7 for Peiving Farm and I forgot that wasn't the page to dear old Charlotte was on  Roll Eyes

Hmmmm, it is strange that someone would write her occupation as a code, maybe it's a code for something not too savoury! The whole family were scattered on the 1851 census - Charlotte's father James was in the Tenterden Workhouse listed as a pauper and her siblings were in various lodgings.

Thanks very much for your input - the links you gave me look really interesting but I think it may be one of those unsolved mysteries.

Kind regards

Kim

Have been reading the links that Ambly kindly sent me and it does indeed appear that it may well have been an code for an occupation so does anyone know what the code 16-5 would stand for?

Having said that - most of the other residents at Peiving Farm have their occupation listed (not by code) - it's a mystery  Huh
