Sam Brown Belt - Soldier ident
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 12:41 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

Wondered if someone could please help me identify a soldier.

As part of my granadads estate I have inherited a Sam Brown belt which was not his - It does have some poor writing on the back, but not sure where to start with finding out more about this soldier and how come my grandad came about the belt.

The writing on it (i believe) says

LIEUT J.E CAIRNS 354112A

ROYAL NORTHUMBERLAND FL

(numbers arent the best shown especially the
last 3 digits and letter A - so not sure if they are correct)

Officers did not have numbers during WW1 which seems to date the belt as later.  It should be possible to trace the officer's commission etc in the London Gazette, but I have to go out shortly and cannot do it just now.

It's probably John Edward CAIRNS (354024).  Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant,
Royal Northumberland Fusiliers 1 July 1945.

Information from London Gazette 31 August 1945.

Hi Shaun.

Thanks for the info, don't know how you manage to come up with something so quick.
Have had another look at the numbers and the 4th number could be a 0 the fifth is definitely a 2 and the 6th looks like an A, suppose pretty similar to a 4.  How would I be able to find out more information on this soldier?, is the London Gazette online?
Like I said previous my grandad died last year so I can't ask him how the belt came into his possession, but would like to find this out.
