I've run into the "Cashel and Emly" brick wall mentioned here in 2006 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,125553
).

I vaguely recall reading on some genealogical message board a while ago that the bishop had decided to make some records available?  Cheesy However, I can't find anything to support this - can't even track down the original comment (I'm wondering if the post was dated 1st April - that would have been a good one, eh?)

The Archdiocese's website http://www.cashel-emly.ie/main/history/genealog.htm is still pointing people to commissioned research at http://albatros.unitedhosting.co.uk/~tipperary-excel.com/TFHR/Price_Pres.htm.  Sad

So I guess the bishop didn't change his mind after all then? Are the exorbitant (to me) prices charged by TFHR still the only option?  Cry

If so, I think I'll call it a day on my Tipperary ancestry (or maybe try contacting a medium - how much do they charge...  Wink )

P.S. I understand the bishop's point of view, which is as valid as any contrary viewpoint. And I also realise that if the research fees were more reasonably priced, TFHR would probably be snowed under. I'm just disappointed.

Thanks Shane.

For anybody else with an interest in this, according to the APGI (Association of Professional Genealogists of Ireland) blog the microfilms were made available to the public again at the NLI (National Library of Ireland) on 27th May 2008 - see http://www.apgi.ie/News2008.html.

I've emailed the NLI just to confirm. I'll post back here when I get a reply.

The blog also says that the LDS were told to withdraw the microfilms in 1991. I've no idea whether they did, or if the records are now available at LDS centres. Does anybody know?

On R---- W---b Tipperary mailing site there is a post from someone who queried this with a member of the LDS staff and was told that the LDS never got the films of the Cashel and Emly parish records. See posting

A contact in England has tried an LDS Family Centre.
It appears that they don't have, and can't get hold of, the RC Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly parish records.
So it looks like the National Library of Ireland is the solitary provider of free access to those records.
