Sarah Baxter

Sarah Baxter was the  illigitimate child of Mary Baxter.  Baptised 8 Nov 1831 Castle Donnington Leicestershire.  Source IGI batch CO60241

Sarah can be found on the 1841 Census living with her grand father William Baxter (born abt 1781).  Also at the same address is Sarah's mother Mary Sumerfield and her husband William, together with their child Thomas.

There are other young children on the census but so far I have only been able to trace the parent of Sarah.

Sarah was found on the 1851 and 1861 census working as a servant in Castle Donnington. (two different address, two different employers)

Sarah is next found on the 1881 census living with her mother Mary Sumerfield who is now widowed.  On this census Sarah's surname is really difficult to read, transcriber used Sarah Gooal, also a widow. Even after reading actual census I still cannot make it out. There was no occupation given for either Sarah or her mother Ann.

If possible I would like to find Sarah's married name and what happened to her after 1881.  I have not been able to trace Mary Sumerfield either on the 1871 census either but as stated above, did find her on the 1881 census for Castle Donnington. Mary died in 1885 Shardlow.

There's a marriage Sep 1867 Shardlow 7b 503 for Sarah Baxter to possibly Richard Goodall (he is misindexed on FreeBMD)

Thanks for that.  I too thought it may have been Goodall but could not find the marriage.  I still cannot find her/him/them on the 1871 census.  May have sunk into the black hole with the rest of the elusive Baxters, this one including Sarah's mother Mary Summerfield (nee Baxter) who I cannot find in the 1871 census either.

I too wonder where they're hiding! There's a death registration for Richard Goodall in Shardlow in Mar 1871 so they should be in the area!  Huh

The 1861 census shows Sarah age 28.  If she married in 1867 she would be about 34.  I wonder if she had children?
