Hi  Smiley,

Can anyone  help please?  I have a death certificate that says Timothy Lyons died in the Union Workhouse St John, Cardiff, 1889.  The only workhouse I can find is in here:

under Workhouse locations/Welsh Poor Law Unions/Glamorgan/Cardiff

would that be the same one?

The workhouse was built on Cowbridge Road in 1839 & an infirmary was added in 1872. The main workhouse was rebuilt between 1879 & 1881 to the design of James, Seaward & Thomas. A further wing was added in 1890.

In 1930 control of the site passed to Cardiff and it became City Lodge Public Assistance Institution. In 1948, it joined the newly formed National Health Service as St David's Hospital. St David's finally closed around 1995 and the building suffered extensive fire damage after an arson attack. It stood derelict for some time before most of the buildings were demolished for redevelopment. Only the front block with its impressive clock tower remains.

Cardiff Workhouse Admissions & Discharge Register 1846 -1847   
Unit Price:-  £ 13.00    + p&p
Our latest CD is a transcript of the admissions and discharges of “patients” to  Cardiff Workhouse in 1846 and 1847. These records were rescued from a flood, and were in very poor condition, photographed by the Glamorgan Record Office and then transcribed. So the result is a unique record of that time. The CD is in our usual Acrobat format which has been indexed and is fully searchable. 
The actual registers are :- Last Quarter 1846 and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Quarter 1847
There is also a scanned copy of the 1868 Architects Building Proposals and plans

Am I right that the St John comes from the Parish of St John & St Mary even though the nearest Church is St David's Huh  Or am I getting this muddled?

If you google Cardiff workhouse you will find some nice images of the building.  The link you posted is the correct one.

the two ancient parishes of Cardiff are St John & St Mary. There's a St David in Ely, but that's a modern parish - the church was built at the start of the 1870s.

Hi all (sorry to group you together Undecided),

Thank you for the info.  There are some good photos on google images and the genuki link was very handy thanks. 

I can't believe that I've walked passed that church by the market so many times and not taken any notice as to what it was, so thank you very much, that was very intersting.  On my trip before Christmas I shall make an effort to have a look inside,
