Sydney Robert Strong

The 1911 census is driving me mad!!
In 1901 Sydney is at the Westminster Palace Hotel, London as a window cleaner and single.
He was born in East Chisenbury, Wiltshire (Enford Parish) 2 June 1865.
I can't find him anywhere in the 1911 searches, nor listed at the Westminster Palace Hotel.
I also cannot find any death record, so he vanished!
Maybe went back to Wiltshire or stayed in London - I don't know.
Are there any 'experts' with any ideas?
Thanks
Graham

Hi

He may of course no longer be in either England or Wales so he won't be found on the 1911 census.  He was still a relatively young man in 1901 so emigration is an obvious possibility.
He might have died - death registered as Robert or depending on the circumstances unknown. He might have chosen to change his name for whatever reason.

Thanks Valda for your suggestions. I did get a friend to check emigrations for me and I had tried other first names but to no avail.
I can't imagine he went far away anyway despite no immediate family except for an older brother Edward still in Wiltshire.
Is everyone listed in the 1911 do you know? I have read about some transcribers books missing but not sure if that means all the household papers are complete

Hi

Unless you think it likely that he had suffragette sympathies then there are no known major problems with the 1911 census but like all censuses some households will not have filled in the census or filled it in illegibly.
If you read the topic guide at the top of the board

A guide to English censuses

you will find for instance that for the 2001 census it is estimated about 94% of the population filled the census in. In 1991 it is believed about a million people are missing from the census. No census has 100% coverage.
There are no census enumerators books. This is the first schedule where the household schedules were not copied into a census enumerator's book (with the household schedules then being destroyed).

Single men as a group are the most difficult to find on censuses but in this case as yet, you also don't have a death registration to prove he was still alive and in this country.

Britain kept no national emigration records. There are immigration records for this period. Britain was far more interested in who was coming in than going out, so I'm not sure what emigration records could have been checked and whatever they were they could in no way be comprehensive.
