1911 search help
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 14:37 UTC (UK) »

Could someone help me find one of my ancesters on the 1911 census,
Ive tried everything i can think of ,but i cant find him.

His name was john donovan,he was born in Ebbw vale, monmouthshire, wales in 1886.
He died in the first world war,he was a private in the 2nd battalion of the welsh regiment.
On the roll of honour for monmouthshire his residence is listed as 25 top row newtown, ebbw vale.

I think the welsh regiment were in pembrokeshire in 1911,ive tried looking for him there but i still cant find him.

He is living with his family on the 1891 and 1901 census's.

Any help would be great thanks.

Have you tried the ebbw vale address in the 1911 'place' search?

Is it possible he'd joined the army before the war, and was overseas? A few of my relatives were based in India and South Africa immediately before WWI.

There are three John Donovan in Overseas Military, born 1879,1888, and 1890.

I think the welsh regiment 2nd battalion were in Pembroke in 1911,so i don't think he would be overseas.
Ive  tried the ebbw vale newtown address but it only lists his sister and her husband and there children as living there at that time.

Its really frustrating, ive tried everything i can think of but i cant find him.
Ive wasted quite a few credits searching for him.

Anyway thanks for the replies.

Was he with the regiment? Do you have their address in 1911? From my experience of census images and transcriptions I guess Donovan is one of those names that could be spelt a dozen different ways - and transcribed even more. The 1911 site on advanced search may help, if you fill in forename, year of birth and probable county, then for surname just put Don, and tick the box that says 'all names beginning with this'. That worked for me when looking up Macdougal, which had been mistranscribed. I hope this helps - I do sometimes think our ancestors went missing just to torment us!]
