Arthur James Murray
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 15:31 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone,

Im trying to find out more info on my grt grandfather, he was supposedly quite high up in the RAF,
he lived in Newport Scotland..but we dont know where exactly he was born, my mother remembers that the didnt have a strong scottish accent so he might not have been born in Scotland.

His family did have a shipping business in South Africa, that shipped (dont know what) to Australia.

With living in Newport im guessing he was based in Leuchars, my mother thinks he might have been a navigator?

Born in 1906.......  died in Newport 12 Dec 1966

Could anyone help me or point me in the right direction ?

Thanks

There is only one Arthur James Murray in the London Gazette. He is commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 28th Nov 1941 and by the end of the war he had reached the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He appears to have stayed in the RAF for a few years after the war and his peactime rank had dropped to Pilot Officer (which is quite normal - most men lost ranks after the war). His service number was 47335 and he served in the Technical Branch.

His pre-commissioning number was 364953 which indicates that he actually enlisted in 1924.

It would be worth applying for his records to ascertain where he was stationed etc

The applicant will need to be NoK. Make sure to ask for photocopies.
