Hi Malcom,

Unfortunately there are no records on the the SFHG databse for Lyminster and although there are some on the IGI, William is not there.

You might have the info on Canada already but I will put it down in case you don't.

In 1871 he is indeed in Canada in Richmond, Quebec
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp=1206865158640#givenName=William;p=recordResults;searchType=standard;collectionId=1551612;surname=Penfold

I cannot see him in the 1851, Quebec 1861 and 1891 census although there are other Penfolds that could be his children.

Regards
Sean

This article looks as though it has some information on the Penfolds.

hi Swebby,

Thanks for your reply. I am beginning to think the William Penfold linked to the Blyth Penfolds,re Gordon Smith, is not William linked to my wifes family unless he committed bigamy. . I have been in touch with Gordon and his William married a lady called Mary in c1844  Our William did marry Hannah Dixon 1828 and they both died in Canada.
The problem is I  only found the one Penfold family in the Northumberland area when I was a member of ancestry unless i missed the other one. our William was still in Chirton Village,  Northumberland   in 1861 at least Hannah and the children were  I guess William was at sea.

Unfortunately I don't  know who William's father was but on the marriage cert. for the William linked to Gordon it stated his father was named  William also and that he was a farmer.

if you can help in any way I would be very grateful,

regards Malcolm

 From Newcastle Courant:

Between 1845 and 1859, Captain Penfold was on the brig Pallas, in and out of North Shields and Newcastle, carrying cargoes of coal etc to the ports of Hamburg, Brest, London and also Quebec.

On Friday April 18 1845, he sailed for Quebec, arriving there on 21st June, 1845.

On March 11th, 1858  The brig Pallas, Penfold of Shields for London stuck on Cromer Rocks yesterday morning but got off with damage to her rudder; She has been towed to Lowestoft.

No mention of his marriage,  However there is in the Courant on  Friday, November 20, 1846

"At Chirton, on the 16th inst., aged 10, George son of Mr. Wm. Penfold, master mariner."

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply, we knew he was captain of the Pallas but you have provided some interesting information.
how do you find the info from the Newcastle Courant ?

The  penfolds are my wifes family but My ggg grandmother was Eliza Piper from Arelsford and married my ggg grandfather John Common in Winchester in 1819 when the 33rd regiment of foot were stationed at Arelsford in Hampshire.

is she any relation to your family ?

regards Malcolm.

Malcolm,

No I am not a member of your family. . The Newcastle Courant is one of 48 British National 19th century newspapers, which are available from Gale Databases online at Lancashire Library. Just go to the website and follow instructions to join the library-yes you have to join, you can't search without joining.

Look up tree 006 on Penfold one name project.  That will tell you where William Penfold and Hannah Dixon were burried (Richmond QC Canada 1876).  They are on the 1861 UK Census and 1871 Canada Census.  tree006 has marriage certificate, the burial plot numbers and location as well as death certificates, etc. Their living sons all moved to Canada and then Robert and William moved to USA.  John Hugh died in Canada age 28,  RR Accident. Albert also died in Canada.  Frances stayed in UK North Shields. She married Stephenson.  What is still unknown are William's parents and record of birth said to be Lyminster, Sussex.  I have found 14 William Penfolds born in that time frame in Sussex nearby, but which one is he?
