Help with grandfathers ww1 records please
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 19:19 UTC (UK) »

Hello ,
I have my grandfathers Medal Card , he joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers , have his number , then at sometime was transfered to the Royal Irish Fusiliers have that number , I have searched for his service records on ancestry to no avail think they must be amongst the burnt ones ,I have found his Pension Records on ancestry .

My question is this he was discharged from the Irish Fuisilers  the Pension Records says Dublin on them but the history of his Medical Records are all from Wales , so could his Service Records be with the Royal Irish Fusiliers and are they in a different location not held at Kew.
               Kind Regards Mrs Griff

I'm afraid not - all the service records of enlisted men who served in WW1 and who were demobbed before 1920 were held centrally in London and were in the building that was bombed in WW2. The surviving "burnt documents" then ended up being microfilmed and lodged at the National Archives.

Hello,
Just looking through the queries on this site and came across this one about WW1 service records being damaged in the bombings of WW2. I had intended looking for my granddads records,  he was gassed on the Somme and received shrapnel wounds to his head, although i'm not sure if at the same time [ he lived for another 20 years with the shrapnel still embeded]. That's all I know, and was hoping to find out more. Could you tell me if as a granddaughter I can apply for his service/medal records and what the chances are of them still being on record.   Thanks.

Pencan,

You can start by going on to the National Archives Website which will allow you to search for your granddad's medal index card:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp?WT.lp=mh-33439

however, a word of warning, unless your granddad had a very unusual name there are likely to be a lot of possibilities, so unless you have some idea of which regiment he served with you are not going to get very far.

Ancestry have now posted on their website [for which you will need a subscription] all of the surviving soldiers' documents - however you will still have the same problem, unless you have some basic info about your man it's going to be a difficult job.

One way round the problem is if your grandfather appeared on any certificate during his war service: did he get married? have a child? - if so the certificate may well give you details of his regiment.

It's also well worth posting what details you do have on this site - lots of very good and helpful people, some of whom do have Ancestry subscriptions,
