This is a photo of my GreatAunt Winifred Ann NEWTON taken in Leicester about 1916. She was born in 1894 so would have been about 22 at this time. I need some help if anyone can help me identify exactly what kind of nurses uniform she is wearing - I assume that nurses from different branches or perhaps hospitals wore different uniforms? I know that she was a trained nurse but can not locate any information about her at that time. I have found that she was not a military nurse from the registars at the NRA and also found that she was not registered with the RCN in 1921 (when there registars began). This might be because she became a nun in 1919. I would really appreciate any help on what can be gleaned from the uniform or what other sources may be useful to find out about her nursing career.

Gerry, the General Nursing Council (GNC) also held registers, today this has been superceded by the United Kingdom Central Council and more recently the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The following in the NMC website gives more information and depending when she qualified her registration may have been with the GNC. It might be worth an email to the NMC to ask how far back their records go? As to the uniform, yes most hospitals had their own but only a few had uniquely distinctive unifroms. However if this photo was taken in Leicester, you could try the University Hospitals of Leicester, they were the Leicester General and Leicester Royal Infirmary prior to the merger. Many hospitals have a staff newsletter and they might post your photo in their to help. website info for GNC at http://www.nmc-uk.org/aArticle.aspx?ArticleID=1634

Hi Beth,
Thank you very much for your most useful response, and sorry for my delay in responding.
The GNC registers were in fact the ones that I have already looked up (they commenced in 1922) and there is no records for my GreatAunt there. They are available at the NRA. However re-reading the RCN Tracing Nurses factsheet, it mentions a published volume covering 1916-1923 but then no record of who holds that publication! I will see if I can contact them.
I will certainly investigate the University Hospitals of Leicester link to see if there are records there.
Thanks Again Gerry
