Why can't I find my family?
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 21:36 UTC (UK) »

My Grandfather, James Young Stewart and his brother John Robertson Stewart, as well as my great Uncle Hywel Penry B Walters all served in WW1.

I Have found medal cards, death records for my uncles. (My grandfather was wounded but did not die.) But I cannot find their service records. I have spent hours scouring the Ancestry files, but come up with no service records. (James and John Stewart are not exactly rare names.)

Do the records not exist? Or am I missing something?

Hi
Not all the service records survive. I believe only about 30 - 40% survive, the rest having been destroyed accidentally in WW2. Your chances of finding any records are therefore not good I'm afraid.

Were any officers. I think that the Officers service records are not on Ancestry, but can be got in person at National Archives

Also depends when you looked, the Other Ranks Srevice Records (such that exist) for surnames O to Z were only added to Ancestry last week, so it may be worth another look.

I looked just this week. Trying to find a J Stewart is as bad as looking for someone named Smith.

My Great uncle John Stewart was a Lieutenant with the Royal West Kent regiment when he died in Palestine.  (I was fortunate to find this information in time to visit his grave. I suspect I am the only family member to do so.) The other 2 were privates, part of the time with Royal West Kent and part of the time with other regiments.

When you say "in person at National Archives," what is the procedure?

I mean officers service records are not, to the best of my knowledge, available anywhere online.

So to get them you either have to tramp to the National Archives and look them up yourself (or pay someone to do it)

Or you can pay Nat Archives to do it. That entails going to NA web site and subjecting yourself to the frustrations of jumping through many hoops!

If you go to their shop tab and dig around there you will find how to get a quote (it does work, I have used it). For the quote you need to find the reference and the man with full details. NA are not the easiest organisation to deal with, but if you cannot get there yourself is the most economical way of doing it. They should charge around  £10 for the service records of an officer.

Thanks, I guess that the National Archives is the way to go, since I am in Canada. I am disappointed that i probably won't ever find my grandfather's war records.

I have seen the information from the commonwealth war graves site. That was how I found the grave in Palestine.

I was very impressed by the graveyard in Jerusalem, both site and the way it was kept as well as  the respect shown by the caretakers.
