Do you have Tindale STUBBS? Completed thankyou.
« on: Monday 09 November 09 11:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I have a distant relative Tindale Stubbs b c1864 St John's Wood, London. In 1881 he is working as a broker's clerk but I haven't been able to find him after that. It is believed that he went to Australia.

Would be interested to hear of any sightings.

Thank-you

Brie

Hello Brie

Perhaps you could give us some further information eg his parents' names and any other names he may have had.

I can't see him in 1881 - the only Stubbs I can see b abt 1864 St Johns Wood is Harry, son of Jane who is a carpenters labourer, living in Hampstead
There is another boy in 1881 Arthur, b abt 1864 St Pancras, carman living as stepson to George and Elizabeth East in St Pancras.

I can't see him on FreeBMD either.

Hi

There are 'sightings' for a Tyndale Stubbs in Australia from about 1884 from what i have been able to gather.  I have been able to find what appears to be the same person listed as Tindale Stubbs at least once.

Tyndale Stubbs was aboard the Lusitania which sailed into Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia in 1884, according to the provic unassisted shipping index that is online.
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/Index_search.asp?searchid=23

Also, Tyndale appears at Yass, NSW from 1901 to about 1908(boy, he sure had a few sheep!).  From then on he appears to live in Randwick, NSW until at least 1937.  I note that i see J.P. after his name at least once.

He perhaps has a wife, Elizabeth Ann.  She resides at the same addresses in Randwick.

These details of where he lived are gleaned from Sands Directories of NSW, and the NSW electoral rolls.

The last year that Tyndale appears on the electoral rolls that are available to me is 1937.

There is an Elizabeth Stubbs who dies in 1938 and whose death is registered at Randwick.(NSW BDM index online)
I can't find Tyndale on that index though - except for the two marriage events involving him.  One in 1886 at Sydney and one in 1901 at Sydney.

I hope that helps.

Hi,

Thank-you both for your replies.

Judith - I should have said, sometimes his name is spelt Tyndale and it is under this name that he appears in the 1881. The contemporary written record we have that says he went to Australia calls him Tindale.

Duinnsleibhe,

That is very interesting information. It looks likely and the dates tie up. How many sheep did he have? Approximately  Smiley - don't count them or zzzzzz

Thanks for that clarification.  I see him now!

Do you want the addresses/occupations for the entries that Duinnsleibhe has found?  Some of the places you can see on Googlemap.

Hi again

How many sheep did he have?

In the Pastoral section of the Sands Directory of NSW for the year 1908, Tyndale Stubbs name is listed.  The listing is for Yellangala Station, Yass.  The number of sheep listed is between 5-6000(the figure is partially obscured).

According to the source mentioned above Tyndale Stubbs was listed at Cleveden(probably a sheep station or property name) , Yass, NSW, in 1901 and 1902.  There is also 'Tyrdale Stubbs'(probably a typo) listed at Burrabogie, Hay, NSW in 1902.  There is no other information given.

This last place, as a matter of interest, has been immortalised by A. B. Patterson.

Do you want the addresses/occupations for the entries that Duinnsleibhe has found?  Some of the places you can see on Googlemap.

In 1910 and 1911, Tyndale Stubbs is listed at Allison Road, Randwick, NSW.
In 1912-1933 Tyndale Stubbs is listed at Fern Street, Randwick, NSW.
*Note: From 1919 Tyndale has the initials J.P.(which i take to mean as 'Justice Of The Peace') after his name.  From 1920 the house number in Fern Street is given as 112.  (Source: Sands Directories)

In 1936 and 1937, Tyndale Stubbs is listed at 33 Greville Street, Clovelly?? (it does not state suburb, just the subdistrict of Coogee), NSW.  His occupation is stated to be 'Station Agent'.  Grin   (Source: NSW Electoral Rolls)

I could attach a  file that lets you go for a tour in Google Earth of the places that i have mentioned - if you have it installed - but the forum does not recognise the file extension of the proposed attachment(.kmz).

Regards

Thank-you,

That certainly is a lot of sheep. And I thought we had a lot here - between the Lakes and Dales.

The poem is a new one to me - just checked my collected works of Patterson and can't see it there so I'll copy it and slip it inside.

I can't get Google Earth on my computer. It is eldery and doesn't like modern technology. A Luddite amongst computers. But thanks for the offer.

And thanks for all the rest of the information. It has been good to find what happened to him.
