Hello,
I'm hoping for some help, not really sure what tho ??
I have William PORTER born abt 1807 Writtle Essex and his wife Elizabeth ?? born abt 1794 Great Waltham Essex, I know of at least one son Alfred James PORTER born abt 1841 Writtle Essex, there is possibly a John PORTER born abt 1842 Writtle Essex. (Info from 1881 census
I have no idea when William and Elizabeth married, William's occupation in 1881 was a Gardener, John above was a Gardener's Man.
Alfred married Annie Elizabeth ADAMS (born abt 1846 Roxwell Essex) some time after 1864, after my gx2 grandmother Caroline Jane ADAMS/PORTER was born 1 Jun 1864 at Writtle, yes Alfred was her father. Alfred and family came to Australia in 1874. On board the St James were
PORTER: James, 32y. Elizabeth, 29y. Caroline, 9y. William, 5y. Elizabeth, 2y
Any suggestions or help with my mess would be much appreciated.

Hi Andrea,
They appear in the 1851 census at Baddow Road, Chelmsford with their sons Alfred aged 11 and John aged 8. With them is a brother John PORTER aged 35.
Ref: HO107/1775/505/25
In 1861 they are on their own at Rose Mount Cottage, Shenfield, Billericay.
RG9/1075/80/14
In 1871 William and Elizabeth are at George Street, Chelmsford with two grand sons Edward 19 a Bricklayer's apprentice and Oswald 16 a Skinsplitter

I have been unable to find them in1841, also no marriage is showing up post 1837, so it looks as if you will have to try parish registers next.
