RCAF Service Number R193734
« on: Monday 09 November 09 04:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi.  I am new to these forums and am hoping someone out there might be able to help me solve a little mystery.
A few years ago, I came into possession of a beautiful WW2 dated RCAF Type B flying helmet.  Written on the chamois lining on the inside of  the helmet is the service number of the original owner:  R193734.  Is there any way at all to find more information on an individual with just the service number.  I would love to be able to find a name to go with the number.  With a name, I might be able to do some more digging to see if the gentleman might still be alive.  Or, if deceased for more than 20 years, I could access his service records.  Also written in the helmet is the number 143 (perhaps 143 Wing RCAF??).
When I aquired the helmet, I also aquired from the same vendor a pair of 1940 dated RCAF flying goggles.  Perhaps these came from the same airman.  Clearly engraved into the goggles in a couple of locations are the initials A.W.T.  Perhaps A.W.T. is R193734.
I find all of this fascinating and would love to learn more about the original owner of the helmet.   If you can help me to solve this little mystery in any way, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply.  I had already considered that the 143 might refer to 143 Squadron RAF and, as such, have already been to the web pages you bookmarked.   No harm, however.   It assures me that I at least might be looking in the right direction!

You could try inputting the number on the London Gazette, National Archives or Flight global site (also put in RCAF) and see if anything comes up.  You might also try the following http://airforcemuseums.ca to see if their archivists can help you.  The NZ version certainly were very willing to help me when I asked.  It might be also worth trying the Canadian Air Force Personnel Records people by filling out a form....

Good luck with your search

Have you got any further on this service No ?

If not,try putting it up on the "rafcommands" message board here,

http://www.rootschat.com/links/07hg/

you will have to sign in, but they do not do pictures, however the details should be enough,

It,s starting to bug me as well,

I filled out a general enquiry form with Canadian Forces.  Maybe they can point me in the right direction...

Good news!

I contacted Libaray and Archives Canada and they gave me the name of the airman for Service Number R193734.  The records came up with Shoom, Morr (I am guessing Morris).

With the name I can try to do some further research.   I already searched the Last Post notices from Legion magazine, as well as the Commonwealth War Graves commission, but to no avail.

I will continue digging...
