Lozelles chain maker
« on: Tuesday 10 November 09 13:58 UTC (UK) »

I have a female ancestor who lived in William Street, Lozelles in 1891 and her occupation is `chain maker`.  As her husband was a jeweller and her son was a diamond setter, am I right to assume she was making chains for the jewellery trade rather than for use in industry?
I`ve `googled` chain-maker and can only find out about industrial ones.

I'm sure you are right. I'vee seen gold chain maker or silver chain maker in the census for that area too.
I can't find much information about it online either. They might be able to help you at this museum

Thanks very much Gardener.  I don`t live very far from Birmingham so it wouldn`t be too difficult  to go to the Jewellery Quarter Museum - I have other relatives who were also involved in the jewellery trade so it should be interesting

A note of Caution, the museum isn't open every day so check on their timetable first.
I would agree with Jane almost cetainly gold/silver watchchains.I have a manufacturer in my family who employed many people making these with some doing "outwork" ie. from home.
Heavy industrial chain was made next door in the Black Country.
