STAMMERS Suffolk to Australia
« on: Monday 18 May 09 21:27 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have any info on Joseph & Maria STAMMERS, part of the extensive Stammers milling family (Suffolk & Essex borders), who appeared in New South Wales in 1829- 1834, and worked a windmill in Sydney called "Suffolk Mill"?

Any information would be great, esp. any details of where he was previously in Suffolk, and how he got to Oz (free passage or transportee).

Many thanks in advance,

Windy Miller

Hi Windy Miller  Cheesy

Try this website  http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

It is an Australian newspapers past website,  it also has the years with which you are searching....could be helpful.

I am also searching for some history on a Mary Stammers born in the same area,  she married Robert Lenton Green in 1809, Halstead Essex.

Hope you find something helpful.  Smiley

One site to try would be Convicts to Australia  (www.convictcentral.com).  This might help if he was transported.

Kimberley & Amber39,

Thanks for your suggestions, I've already tried both with no luck, though the ndp site is really interesting and I could see myself taken down all sorts of interesting side-tracks there.

Of to Oz next month for a family holiday though plan to spend a few days at the State Library of NSW.  Might have some luck there.

If you are going to the state Library, check out their website first.
They have very detailed tutorials which guide you through the process of searching every avenue of your ancestors' journey from the UK to Australia.

There is free access to the general public for a large section regarding transportation and ships incoming, as well as censuses etc, but if you want more specific information - for example doctor's logs from ships - you generally need a library card. It's free for a local, but I don't know how easy it is for a visitor.

If you're after information regarding a mill in Sydney, try the Lands Office, just around the corner from the library:

http://www.lands.nsw.gov.au/about_us/lands_offices

for the address and details.

If you wander down into the bowels of the building they have indexes of title in Sydney, old maps and whatever else you could wish for. You can have printouts of the original documents with signatures (for a fee), though some have been digitised, and I think these are free

Happy Hunting, though you've picked the wrong time of year to come to Sydney Wink

Cheers,

Lewis

Hi Lewis,

I've an Aussie Passport, was there in March, and got a library card!  Already to go!

Very useful info on the land office, will have to pop in there, as my main interest in Sydney will be the windmills.  My relatives arrive in Rocky (1855) on the Utopia (first boat up the Fitzroy), so off up there to see the old family graveyard in Gracemere, where the Archers had their farm, and where my GGGP's worked to pay-off their passage.

Thanks for the tip,

If you have an Aussie Passport, I'd suggest it's well worth a try to get a free library card for the National Library of Australia as well. I''ve never been there - but with your card number you can access their electronic resoources over the web:

http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/index//

They have a great series of databases, full text search of collections of Eighteenth Century Books, Newspapers and Pamphlets going back to the 16th Century, and series of books known only as Early English Books Online which covers most books printed in the first century of printing.

On checking the website I see you must reside in Australia to get a card, but I did not look far - perhaps that only means they will only post it to an Australian address, or perhaps you have a relative who will get a card for you to use.

Lewis

P.S. If you can't get a card it's worth a look anyway because theire is a percentage  of sources that are available without restriction.

Lewis,

Seems they (NLA) are based in ACT?  I'll not be heading there, so will give it skip for now but may ask my brother to get a card (he is in Sydney) and may try using it that way.

Thanks again,
