I have been happily using Family Tree Maker 10 for several years and have found it perfect for organising all my data. But unfortunately it's not compatible with Vista. I decided to splash out and buy the latest version of Family Tree Maker but am terribly disappointed - the interface is fiddly and confusing - nothing like as user friendly as the older versions. I could probably get used to it -- given a very long time -- but I have also discovered that the Relationship Calculator seems to have some kind of fault. It picks up obscure relationships by marriage but misses the obvious blood relationship. I took this up with Ancestry but they were no help.
I am wondering whether anyone can recommend a really good programme I can use in place of Family Tree Maker. Something with a good clear interface - that will not become obsolete in a few years. I would like something that can produce attractive charts and can cope with a database of several thousand names.

Many thanks for the suggestions.
I would persevere with FTM if it wasn't for the problem with the relationship calculator.
Will download legacy and give it a try.

I upgraded this summer from Rootsmagic 2 to Rootsmagic 4, the interface is easy and logical, and charts are good. You can download a free trial.....the reviews are very good.. newbie

I installed FTM 2010 on a new computer. I then used it to open a file from he old FTM. I think there is no dounbt that there is something wrong with this new version. I took this up at some length with Ancestry but all they did was refer me to their support page.
The new relationship calculator in the 2010 version is much more thorough in finding whatever relationships exist. Some people interpret unexpected relationships as errors in the relationship calculator, when they are actually errors in the data
They did not seem able to take the point that I was not bothered that the programme was identifying new reltionships by marriage - I was well aware of these even though the old progamme did not discover them. My problem was that the new programme failed to discover clear blood relatinships in circumstances where I was able to demonstrate that there could not possibly be a problem with the data.
I am pleased than these other prorammes offer a trial version but I think i will find it very hard to replace my old FTM
