Freeman of the Borough of Leicester
« on: Thursday 10 March 05 21:59 UTC (UK) »

Hello all!

How do I go about looking for information on someone who was made a Freeman of the Borough of Leicester? Apparently Joseph Donisthorpe was made a freeman in 1832, I don't know why and I don't know what the perks were. I don't know when he was born, who he married, or when he died. I just know he was a supervisor (of what, no idea) and he most likely had a son also called Joseph Donisthorpe in 1804. Help!

Hi Miriam,

Leicester City Council has information on its website that you might find useful for background:  http://www.leicester.gov.uk/departments/page.asp?pgid=666

I don't know if the Council have records of Freemen?

:-)

Miriam,  The records office in Wigston holds lots of information on Freemen of Leicester.  I was able to look up lots of my relatives going back to 1600.  Jo.

Have you tried the records office at Wigston they have information there. Or you could try Martin Hagger, clerk of the board at Leicester freemens estate, 32 Freemens Holt, Old Church Street, Aylestone, Leicester, LE2 8NH. Tel.0116-2834017. E-mail.leicester.freemen@ntlworld.com

Please note that this information is about two years old as it dates from when I was looking for a Leicester Freeman.

regards
