Census search please!
« on: Friday 20 November 09 17:22 UTC (UK) »

Hello
Can anyone see if they can find an Eleanor Whitebread/Whitbread on either the 1861 or 1881 census? She was born between 1833 - 1839 (depending on the census!) in West Hanningfield Essex. I have her on the 1851 and the 1871 although on the 1871 she is Eleanor Holtaway (not that I can find a marriage between her an William Holtaway!).
Thanks
Lisa

Interesting.  I assume you have not looked at 1841?
HO107 325 4 3       West Hanningfield
Thomas Whitbread 47 Wheelright
Matilda 45
Sarah 17
Alfred 15
William 13
Louisa 10
Matilda 10 twins
Mary 6

By 1851 he has a different wife and of the above children only Louisa is with him.   Could Eleanor be the daughter of the second wife?
Regards
Andrea

Hi

Was she with parents in 1851?  If so - can you post full 1851 details

The above 1841 details were for West Hanningfield and the reference is  HO107 Piece 325/18  Folio number not shown  Page 3

Hi - thanks
Yes I already had the family on the 1841 - she's not on there either! As far as I know Matilda and Elener were the same wife...although I have nothing to prove that either way at the moment.  Her parents are Thomas and Eleanor Whitebread, Thomas was a wheelwright and they lived in West Hanningfield when Eleanor was baptised.
Basically I need to find out who the Whitebread parent of Edward Whitebread Holtaway was.  I think it was Eleanor, but I'm not sure.  If she's Eleanor Holtaway on the 1881, it could have been transcribed as Holloway as it was on the 1871.
Edward Whitebread Holtaway gives the correct age at every census and his marriage to be born in 1859, but we aren't sure if he was Edward Whitebread then - an Edward Whitebread appears on the 1861 census with Thomas and Eleanor Whitebread as a "visitor" along with a George Whitebread.  On Edward Whitebread Holtaways marriage certificate, a George Whitebread is a witness.  Edwards death cert arrived today, but gives no clues.  Edward appears on the 1911 census with his aunt Matilda Green (nee Whitebread) and her sister Louisa Taylor.
Confused?  I am! :-)
