I am trying to solve a bit of a family mystery. My father had always been told that his great uncle (Noel Victor Cotgreave b. 1897) has fought in WW1 and been shot through the head (he survived, was disabled and lived with his brother William Harry Cotgreave). However, I can find the war records of William Harry and their brother Cyril Charles Cotgreave, but no mention of Noel.

Is it possible the archive simply isn't online, has been destroyed, or that he lied about his name. If so is there any way to track it down? On the otherhand perhaps the war story was a means of making a disability from birth 'respectable', and if this is the case does anyone have any information on the Cotgreave brothers past 1901, or any advice in finding out about them! They lived around Oswestry.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi

I've looked under Victor and Noel with variations of surname but, like you can't find anything, not even a medal card.

I see the family lived in Gobowen at some stage (children born there).

I'm wondering if you might contact the local studies librarian at Oswestry. He might have something on him - obituary, etc. He's been very helpful to me in the past.
