Dear All,
I am interested in information concerning James Waldie, reportedly born in Roxburgh in 1685. (I have seen a date of 23 Aug 1685- perhaps this refers to a christening). James is shown on a number of “open” family trees as being the son of James Waldie (abt 1645) and Mary Laing (abt 1648) ,and also the father of James Waldie (1722-1767) from whom I have descended.
From what I can see the evidence surrounding James Waldie 1685 remains scanty. I am also a bit concerned that there appear to be no records of a spouse.
I have looked through the forum but can see no previous discussion concerning this particular James Waldie. I will be very grateful to learn of any evidence that either confirms or refutes the connections I have assumed. And if anyone can find James a wife he will certainly feel less lonely sitting on the family tree!
Thank you
Kevin

Kevin, I also have James Waldie in my tree, born 1685 but did not know who his parents were. (not my direct line) His birth is on the IGI as 23 August 1685; parents James Waldie & Marie Lyng. On SP there is a marriage of a James Waldie to Elizabeth Brotherstone on 15th February 1740 in Kelso. Maybe a bit late? I have not looked at the full cert.
I am descende from his brother Robert.

Thank you Susan for taking the time to help. And it is good to have another name, Brotherstone, to ponder.
I do agree that 1740 for a marriage seems a bit late- perhaps James was a bit shy? Would looking at the full certificate indicate the names of his parents? (Sorry I am new to this and I'm probably asking the obvious.) And I am even guessing that SP means Scotland's People
Thanks again!
Kevin

Kevin, I have just had a look on SP and the proclamation of marriage for James & Elizabeth has J's father as Nichol Waldie (I think that's what it says) so maybe it's not the right James. His mother is not named.
I'll keep looking. :

Thanks again Susan.
It may well be that I'm near the end of what is knowable about this particular line of the Waldie family. Now, if only everyone had kept detailed diaries and deposited them in the records office all this would have been so much easier!

Kevin I dont know if you can help - I have George Waldie born about 1779 - my 3rd Great Grandfather on the 1851 census - he married in Lincolnshire then lived in Hull, East Yorkshire. The 1851 states Melrose, Roxburghshire as his place of birth. Try as I have I cannot locate his family. He was a Millwright and named his children - Jane, Mary Ann, George, Margaret, James and Archibald. Could you help in any way? I live in Australia. Regards Val.

Hi Val,
Sorry for the delay and also my response, for I have looked through my tree and connot find any connection to "your" George Waldie. Sorry for the disappointnment. However, as my tree carries on growing, I shall certainly keep an eye out for additional information concerning that branch. Best wishes, Kevin
