1. Either right click on the "E" for internet explorer on your desktop or select tools from the menu options

2.  select  properties

3. click on the security tab and make sure the appropriate active x boxes are ticked

Hello,

Yes, the last time I tried to view a census page it prompted me to download the new viewer - no problems.  However, I must say I think the new viewer is not as good as the old one  -  wonder why they did that?  I guess having a lower quality but quicker image is good, but ...

Kev,

I'm guessing, but wonder if you need to update your activeX version, this can be done via Windows Update (if you're using windows obviously).

Good luck

I'm glad you guys are there!  I thought it was just me, so I mailed them asking what to do.  Await reply..

Is the one they want you to download dig=fferent from the "old" enhanced viewer then??  I'm on dial-up, so it will take another age to download & I'd rather not.

If you look when its loading the new view it says 'use old viewer' as its loading

Gone back to ancestry twice tonight downloaded the new one again and when I get to the page it tells me it isn't loaded! Then it goes back to the old one again lol

Sorted it, computer crashed over and over again. Reinstalled windows, still didn't work.

Read more on the help page which is the american site though!!!

Found out the new viewer doesn't work with windows XP which i have.

Said to delete all cookies, so i tried it . When i tried to view an image it tried to download new viewer again. Cancelled it and after 10 attempts managed to click on dont download advanced viewer before page changed and bingo !!!

Oh dear!  May have to cancel plans to buy new puter when the elastic goes in this one!!

I got a msg from Ancestry saying "you have to download new viewer", so I gritted my teeth and...

...it took about 2 minutes and works perfectly!  I'm not so much smug as amazed - I'd got so used to things not working or going dead slow on Windows 98.

Maybe I should run 2 computers, with one dedicated to census viewing?!?  Grin Grin

You could always get a new computer partitioned with windows xp on one and windows 98 on another, then you can run whichever works best on whatever windows.
