McCutcheon/McFarland in Tyrone
« on: Wednesday 16 March 05 20:39 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any information about any connection between these family names. We are led to believe that my Great Great Grandparents were a John McCutcheon and a Mary McFarland (or McFarlane). Mary (McFarland) McCutcheon came to Canada about 1894 when her son William returned to Ireland to bring her over. William and a brother named Samuel emigrated about 1886. I have 2 possible birth dates for William, 1869 and 1872, but no registration of his birth has been found. Mary died in Canada in 1899 and her age is given as 78 making her born about 1821 and possibly married in the 1840's or 50's. We believe that if our William was born around 1870 then Mary may have been too old to actually have been his mother and therefore may have actually been his grandmother and raised him as her own; possibly a daughter of her's an unwed mother. Which also questions his relationship with the "brother" he came to Canada with - maybe an uncle?? Samuel headed "west" and disappeared.

If anyone has any information that might lead to finding out the Tyrone origins of these McCutcheon's I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. THANKS

Hi KHartley.

I have just discovered a McCutcheon/McCutchen connection in my family in Strabane, Tyrone. One Anabela McCutchen married a Hamilton and their son William John (born c1870) married my ggm. Maybe we have no connection, and my details are certainly sketchy (to say the least!) Anyway, just thought I'd make contact.

This is a long shot, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.  I have an Elizabeth McFarland b. 1811 Ireland. m. Robert Livingston b. 1797.  He is listed on his Military discharge papers as from Drumragh, County Tyrone.  He signed up in Londonderry, County Derry with the 50th Regiment of Foot and served the King, until his discharge in 1827 from Jamaica.  In lieu of pension he received a land grant in 1838 in New Brunswick Canada.
Robert and Elizabeth had eleven children: Leticia b. 1830 Ireland,  Andrew b. Ireland , Armour, Robert King, Catherine, Robert (my Great, Great Grandfather) and others.
We are assuming there is a McFarland connection in Ireland, but as of yet have no information on our Elizabeth, or link to Drumragh.  There are family stories that three brothers or uncles came to Canada together, one remained in New Brunswick and one went west, one to the United States.
I would love to hear from anyone regarding these families and a possible link.
Thanks to all
