ITALY - Giovanni Noto

Searching for any information on Giovanni Noto.  Birthplace, immigration, death, etc.

• Immigrated to USA, possibly in 1901
• Resident in Jay, Franklin County, Maine in 1911 (but cannot be found in 1910 census)
• Convicted of murder and sentenced to term of life imprisonment in Maine State Prison at Thomaston
• Listed in 1920 US Census as "resident" of prison above.  Age 38 at time of census.
• Applied for pardon in 1924.  Denied
• Not listed in 1930 US Census of prison residents

Possibly died in prison between 1924 - 1930?  Paroled?  Can find no evidence of further pardon requests.

First one he was 31 years old and had been in the country 14 years. Came to Maine in July, 1910 - e.g. he wouldn't be there in the 1910 census, which was taken in April - and to Chisholm 23 days before the killing.

Second one gives his name as "John Noti", third one as "Giovanni Notto"
Fourth one shows pictures of them.


Have you tried the Maine State Archives? They seem to have some records of the Maine State Prison.

Try the general search. They have some hits for "Inmate case files 01/01/1920 to 12/31/1939" but no further details. Probably best just to email them and see to what extent they can assist you.

This is incredible; I cannot thank you enough!

I have found numerous newspaper articles at newspaperarchive.com, but these are so much better as I found little detail regarding the trial itself and certainly no pictures.  Again, thank you.

I have been in contact with the Maine State Archives in the past and have obtained some documents from them, but am always searching for additional detail.

Noto was granted a full pardon on January 6, 1925.

Now, I wonder where he went ...
