I am trying to trace a Robert Blackett, who was a sailor. He married a Sophia Dyball in Shoreditch, London in 1810, so I think he would have been born about 1777 to 1780. Sophia was from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, where they raised their 3 children. But I don't know where Robert is from. My grandfather always said that the family moved from Newcastle down to Great Yarmouth. Apparently one of the Blacketts (Robert or his father maybe) owned a ships chandlers business in Newcastle but he drank the business away (that is the family lore). I haven't found a Robert Blackett in Newcastle at that time yet. Any help anyone could give me on this would be wonderful. This part of my family tree is so frustrating. Cheers, Jane

Welcome to rooschat.
Not sure I can be of much assistance, but you can see the distribution of the surname around Durham/Notherumberland here: http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/Surnames.aspx
So that part of the family story sounds very possible.
Bit of a long shot, but did Robert live long enough to appear in any censuses? The 1851 census should give his place of birth.
Do you have his marriage or children's baptisms? Do any of these give Robert's place of birth?
May there be a record of his chandler's business in any of the directories of the time?
Durham/Northumberland Bishops Transcripts are searchable on Familysearch, and if you can find Robert's birth/baptism you could very well get some good information from it. The hard part is finding where he was born.

Hi, I have seen the birth record of Robert Blackett in 1777 and that might be him but I just can't tell. He isn't in any of the censuses so I can't get his place of birth from there. They were married in 1810 in London and I have ordered the church records fiches from St. Leonard's in Shoreditch, but they won't come for another month. I suspect I won't learn a lot from them. Cheers, Jane

Hey Gary, how did you get that link to the bishops transcripts? Could I use the same thing to find the marriage of Robert Blackett in London?

Jane, there are some bmd's on Ancestry for London parishes.
I know St Leonards Shoreditch is covered (though need to check date range) as I've looked up some marriages in that church for my own research.
I'll see if I can find your marriage ...

That would be wonderful Ruskie. It is hard to wait for the films to come in (especially since it takes 4-6 weeks). Cheers, Jane

Ok Jane - not good news I'm afraid.
The entry reads:
Robert Blackett of this parish bachelor and Sophia Dyball of this parish spinster were married in this church by banns this 21st day of August one thousand eight hunderd and ten by me Tho White curate. They both signed their names witnesses: George Lemming (also a witness to another marriage on the previous page) and Elizabeth Smith
I'm not sure if I'm capable of doing this but if you send me your email address via a PM I will attempt to send you the image.

Hi Ruskie, Sigh. I was worried about that. She was from Great Yarmouth, not London. I wonder if they eloped. He may have been from London at that point, although I think he was really from Newcastle (not sure). That was my last hope to figure out where he was from. I don't know where to try next. He could be the Robert Blackett from Newcastle (c1777) but I can't know for sure. Not sure what to do next. Thanks for your help on this! At least I know the answer doesn't lie in those records. Cheers, Jane

To be "of the parish" you only needed to have resided there for a number of weeks, so as you know that Sophia was from elsewhere, perhaps Robert was too.
Theres no way of knowing if the 1777 Robert is the same chap.
